you ever got that one distant mutual u always figure must have unfollowed u by now and then they pop up in your notes and you’re like….. wow shes still Doing That… bitch is still here despite it all….. what kind of validation
i think about the way diana reacted when dr. poison’s gas killed everyone in the village, at a complete loss, total distress on her face because she didn’t save them. i think about the way clark reacted when the bomb went off at the court and everyone died, how he froze, didn’t even look around him despite the flames engulfing everything, becaused he didn’t save them
diana’s “they are dead. they are all dead. i could have saved them.” and clark’s “i was standing right there and i didn’t see it.” are the same statement, they’re both
acknowledging that, under different circumstances and mindsets, they would absolutely have the power to help and even prevent the harm from ever reaching those people, but it all got overshadowed by their personal battles, beliefs and expected outcomes. and at the time of those events, they’re both young, they’re both more naive than they should be but no less than they have the right to, and yet it’s all going to unfold differently for each of them
diana essentially stops ares, wins the war, but ultimately detaches herself from man’s world. she sees we all have the choice to do bad things, nobody forcing our hands, and we choose it. we choose to do bad things and there are no other gods of war she can slay to help us. it’s all on us despite an ever lingering hope we can change for the better. we can. we mostly don’t. clark is thrown into our world on full display without wanting or planning to, simply because he’s forced to fight by someone else’s hand, on more than one occassion. but he does fight because it’s not our fault earth houses the last son of krypton. because the people he loves and wants safe aren’t to blame for the fact he’s feared and misunderstood. it’s not his fault either
diana will go on believing that the number of people choosing to do good aren’t enough to make a considerable dent on the scale, yet the unfolding events upon the justice league’s formation and bruce wayne’s newfound hope in humanity will eventually change that. she’ll learn the scales might surprise you. clark, having died protecting the same people that did everything in their power to show him how much unwanted and feared he was, will return and no matter his newfound disposition either about humanity never deserving him or his resolve to be there for us despite everything, will have changed his mentality considerably due to all the events that caused and took place up until his sacrifice and death
the potential of strong character development between and through any possible interactions diana and clark might have in the dceu is ridiculously exciting to consider. they have so many things in common and yet they’re so different, both when they started and where they currently are. one regained hope, the other posthumously became it
Attack of the Clones legitimately is my favorite Star Wars movie and if I could rank them all purely on enjoyment and nostalgia and feel confident to ignore popular consensus and ‘objective film critique’, it beats out Empire Strikes Back.
When I want to see what tempest in a teapot controversy or bullshit rumor or complaint against the DCEU is for this day (I swear I learned it’s a new one every other day and sometimes twice a day), that’s why I lurk on Twitter. On tumblr I follow only DCEU positive blogs and a handful of comics fandom people- and yet here leaks in those bullshit posts across my dash.
This is why mobile needs that block post feature. I swear it’s the “WW has no marketing” 🙄 again.
The stepping stone: rarepair is tagged, but it’s only used as a pathway to a ship you don’t care about. they disappear by chapter 3 after the characters the author actually wants to get together do.
The weird smut: They are both in this story, and may or may not have had sex with each other at some point. It’s kind of hard to tell because there are at least seven other people having sex, three subplots, eleven niche kinks, and maybe characters from several other fandoms.
The why-is-this-even-tagged?!: One character or both is in love with someone else. The ship actively dislikes each other if they do not hate each other. There is no positive relationship between them at all, but the ship is tagged regardless.
The mention: They’re mentioned in line 722 out of 2180. They never come up again.
The okay, I guess: It’s a semi-normal story about them. The grammar isn’t the best, but it’s readable. The plot is cliche, but it’s tolerable. They’re somewhat in character and you settle for it because it isn’t great, but it’s probably the best you’re gonna get.
The *sigh*: It would be cute, if the author was actually a good writer. Sadly, it’s so god-awful you cannot stomach it, and must abandon it completely.
The nice- oh, wait: The summary sounds good. It seems like it has decent grammar and it’s one of the only fics for your ship on the site. You click on it. It is written entirely in German.
The holy grail: THIS IS IT. THE PERFECT RAREPAIR FIC. EVERYTHING IS GREAT AND INCREDIBLE AND WONDERFUL, AND THIS IS THE GOLDEN ONE YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU WOULD FIND. THIS IS IT. THIS IS THE ONE.
The dammit-my-standards-are-too-high-now: You read The Holy Grail and now everything else seems garbage. Oops.
superman giving the people what they wanted and showing up to a congressional hearing of the senate to answer for his actions that no matter how noble still resulted in collateral damage is one of the bravest things someone in his position could do, and even though it didn’t go well (thanks lex) he still cast aside everything that makes him superior to the average person and put himself at the mercy of the court because that’s what made people feel safe and that’s why superman is my favorite hero
on the one hand this is a joke post because lol i have never made a good post in my life, but also, if i hadn’t made the connection
between this update and my sudden nosedive in activity, i would have been really fucking discouraged about all the shit i’ve been working on lately. i guarantee there are people on tumblr right now who haven’t made that connection, and who are trying to figure out why suddenly no one likes anything they’ve made. and that fucking sucks.
Reminder to go into your settings and turn off ‘Best Stuff First’ because my activity’s tanked a couple days ago for no reason so this stuff IS happening.
You WILL miss content with that setting on.
i ain’t joking when i say that my activity looks JUST like this too and i wasn’t sure why
Wait, I thought that was just on the app, is that something they’re doing on the desktop version, too?
as far as i know, this is still only on mobile. i’m seeing a lot of reblogs both from people who hadn’t made this connection and were feeling devastated about their apparent failure, and people who hadn’t realized why there weren’t any new posts appearing in their mobile app (reminder: settings > general preferences > dashboard, turn off ‘best stuff first’).
i think a lot of us underestimate how many tumblr users actually use mobile as their primary way of using this site. i mean, i try to use mobile as little as possible, since it’s an extra-broken variation of a site that needs special browser extensions just to be fucking usable. but most people aren’t like that, and most people just scroll their dash on their phones when they’re bored, and the majority of those people aren’t going to bother taking the extra step of changing their settings. that’s what tumblr is counting on: most people are not like us weirdos who are on here all the time, and they don’t actually give a shit. which is a perfectly reasonable way to interact with a website, honestly, it just sucks to be us.
i turned off this feature just as soon as they rolled it out, so i don’t know what kinds of posts are getting pushed to the top. if i had to guess i’d say that whatever algorithm they’re using deprioritizes nsfw content and posts that link off-site (this has been a problem for a while now with search results, incidentally: if you make a post that links elsewhere, it may not even show up in the tags). i mean, i assume they’re also trying to take into consideration posts that are already getting a lot of notes, but this update was never about usability, and was always about making the app in particular easier to monetize by pushing more advertiser-friendly content.
someone mentioned that the activity page also seems to be broken now in general, and isn’t showing accurate numbers. this pans out, since right now it’s showing me at under 3k even though this post alone has more than that. so there’s just… a lot of nonsense happening right now.
the takeaway is that tumblr continues to be a hot mess and if your activity has plummeted you shouldn’t take it too hard, because it has nothing to do with you or anything you’ve done.
Yeah, while I think they broke the activity page around when they rolled this out, it can’t just be the “best stuff first” doing it. I’m no @unpretty, but I got 200+ notes on a post Friday, and Activity only showed it at 25 notes all day as my “top post”. And in the detailed activity, for days I haven’t been seeing replies, I’m not seeing mentions, I’m not seeing new followers, a few are in my activity but most aren’t. And since I have my Activity set to 24 hours, I’ll see a spike of 100 notes an hour ago, but flat at 10 the rest of the day… and then an hour later that spike disappears, and flattens out again. Activity’s broken.
I mean, do please encourage everyone to turn off “best stuff first” for mobile, because it sucks, but this is happening even though I know most of my followers and note-providers use desktop tumblr, not mobile. It’s possible the broken activity is part of the same code change as “best stuff first”, but I’d bet more on it being related to the code change that caused activity grouping on mobile – you know, the “person and 10 others liked your post” grouping, which is also broken and on iOS only works once and then won’t refresh unless you close and restart the app.
But either way, what the hell, @staff. Fuckin’ cowboy coders with no QA, istg…
