I hate that almost all Batfam centric fic, gen or otherwise, with have DickBabs at least in the background. I know there is a section of the fandom that doesn’t ship them romantically, and I know part of the reason that pairing is a NOTP for me (one of those gentle ones where I have to and can tolerate it in fics instead of an insta back button) is because I didn’t come into the comics during the late 90s and early 2000s, that the Teen Titans cartoon was one of my first exposures, and that then the nu52 and Rebirth has Babs as this much younger, frankly not appealing character. Reading Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl series is giving me Barbara, and she’s starting to click as a character, but because at least these first volumes she’s strongly Cass’s foster mother arguing with Bruce, which while doesn’t make the Bruce/Babs ship any less awful and NOTP, does reinforce the sense that she belongs a half-generation above Dick and is more his metaphorical aunt than love interest. And that I have a hard time shipping characters when the female character is in the very late teens and early twenties when the male character is early teens, if introduced that way. It reads as cool big sister having to deal with juvenile boy’s crush, which is also why I could never support or like Katara/Aang. I can latch onto childhood crushes/puppy love if both characters are roughly the same age, but mostly I hate ships that smack of student/mentor. (On the confessions of my NOTPs annoyingly canon, Diane/Numair I hate, and it’s also one of the reasons both characters are also some of my least favorite protagonists written by Tamora Pierce.) If there was no hint of romantic feelings between Dick and Barbara before Dick was Nightwing, I could maybe tolerate it more. But also that, frankly, I don’t see the appeal of their characters together. I prefer it both when they have relationships outside the immediate Batfam circle.

He is so…

Hahahaha was there really such a gap? Isn’t Dick the Hot One in general? (though in the movie I watched teen Jason already looked ready 2 blossom into a heartthrob while Dick was really not that charming, but I get the feeling that’s not the way of things in general? Hehe)

Dick has always been pegged as the handsome one with the #1 best ass in the universe both outside in fandom and even in-universe – whereas Jason is known for his thighs (Jason’s thighs are very much A Thing), and when drawn pretty, is drawn really pretty. Dick is(was) the social heart of the superhero community, the one everyone liked and trusted; he’s supposed to be really charming. What the meta pointed out, in the Batman comic book, at the time Jason was brought back, you had Bruce at the height of his most asshole, and Bruce generally drawn as the standard American Superhero lantern jaw bodybuilder bear in his late 30s, and then Tim Drake, the eternal 16 sixteen-year-old Robin who wasn’t even in the Batman books for a bit at this point, and Dick who was that twenty-something athletic but not too muscled really good-looking guy- but he was in his own series and also going through some ..blah…writing. So here’s newly revamped Jason, filling that gap in-between Bruce and Tim, and sometimes the art in UtH he looked too old or not as pretty, but then panels where yeah, here he is, back from the dead and on the other side of puberty, thank you for the tight jeans and leather jackets. And he’s an anti-villain/anti-hero that DC didn’t realize they and made too sympathetic in comparison to Batman. (No seriously they were shocked at how popular he was and especially among female fans).

Of course, I will never not find it funny but also weird that Jason post-resurrection is as tall if not taller than Bruce (not as bulky, but also drawn more muscled than Dick, though), because back in the 80s he was drawn as very short (and his hair very curly) and he spent at least a few years homeless on the streets so realistically that childhood malnourishment would have stunted his height. Then again, like how old he looks when he came back (his UtRH does not look like nineteen year-old), the art made him look older than he was back since the arc he was killed, trying to visually distance from the fact that they were writing the murder of a fifteen year old boy.

There’s official art depending out which artist that makes any of them either ugly or hot, but it’s taken as a given that they are all eye candy, just (slight) variations on the theme.

why yes i am happy that everyone so far i have introduced to the batfam has followed me in choosing Jason as their favorite/hottest Robin. No shame there.
