Self-Indulgent Writing, More Mermaid Side-Story

squirrelwrangler:

More long post WIP original story, directly continuing off of this post. Stopped at a point so the post would be shorter than the first snippet (five pages is not a snippet, I know).

“I enter the dry hall of the king, my shell dress still dripping wet, which is a faux pas, and I could not describe to you my hair. All my journey I fret that I must make a good impression, and here is how I arrive. The dry hall is wood, semi-open to the elements, unlike other portions of the palace complex which are of coral and stone. Had I been escorted to one of those rooms, my anxiety would have overpowered me. But I was tired from swimming and determined to have this position at court, to learn under Queen Gara, so the magnitude of what surrounds me is deadened. So dark is it, I cannot not see the details of wealth around me. There are curtains of sea-wool, like gold made into mist, hanging from the ceiling. Just enough of that cloth to make a pair of lady’s gloves is worth a lord’s ransom in your land. Metal objects, which are more rare and precious in the islands, decorate the room, and the hinges and furnishings on the doors are made of brass. The first time I saw one of your temples with doors of solid bronze, every carving cast in metal and not carved, I sat on the steps and just stared for hours in sheer wonder. But the palace of Iro was the first wonderful and wealthy place that I came to. What else can I say to describe it that morning? Flowers are grown around the outer walls to provide a sweet scent to combat the scent of salt. The winds bring it in through the open panels. I have found only a few perfumes that come close to matching those flowers. And how strongly a smell is, or its qualities, is highly dependent on my current form. Scent memory is therefore strange for me. Alas, it would have been nice to stand there for while and dry, but I am immediately shuffled onward.

“The king himself, not any master of servants, is the one to collect me from the guard escort. He wears no crown; King Isore rarely did, but he did not need to, for how recognizable he is.” Amabel paused. “The man that Great Lady Manon spoke to in Stonegift, her banker with the stupid feathered hat, you recall him?”

“I liked his hat,” Gislin said.

I also listen to a lot of video game soundtracks (and instrumental covers of them!). There’s also … hm, like pseudo-soundtracks? Audiomachine, instrumental tracks of Two Steps From Hell, Future World Music, Epic Score, Matias Puumala. Oh, and I like some Jennifer Thomas and Elijah Bassenbroek for more soothing background music.

My Problem with Audiomachine and Two Steps from Hell is that i listen to them regularly, so they are the ‘formulation of fic scenes and ideas’, not the innocuous background sounds to keep me from loosing focus while I write’ music :p

I’m not familiar with watership down, but i heard it’s super sad? The movie is NOTHING like regular dog movies though dsbuhddhbn but if you don’t like Wes Anderson I don’t feel like I should encourage you, it’s pretty much his trademark writing/directing/aesthetic/dialogue/etc, so… :/

Yeah, it’s one of those very distinctive directors, and I feel like I should like him, but I don’t. I don’t dislike him.

Watership Down is good, movie and especially book, but has a few sad moments. more it’s just that style of fiction quasi-started with Black Beauty of animal viewpoint, and has a great fictional rabbit culture (like, i bet the venn diagram of tolkien fans and watership down fans is close) But…not a little kids’ movie. and Plague Dogs is, so I’ve heard, Grave of the Fireflies levels of audience emotional evisceration.

I thought you liked hotel budapest tho buhdnjds idk why?? I must have dreamed you reblogged something about it or something hahaha

I don’t think I have. Maybe liked a gif set because I love movies that have a  strong stylized use of color.

hehehehe sorry to ask you such a difficult question <3 I also asked Becca the same, just to compare our answers!

Nah, it’s fine- it was actually pretty easy for me to answer with a few seconds of thought. I just in general have a hard time with ranking questions, because I overthink and want to be 100% honest and fair and get guilty about picking a favorite even if fictional (like, that has to be a psychological thing with being not an only child and hammering home the ‘parents don’t have favorite children and it’s terrible to seriously suggest that mom or dad do and even if one did, don’t show it’)

I like video game soundtracks when I write, especially those 30 Min repeats of a theme. Legend of Zelda stuff from Wind Waker is whimsical and upbeat, or Hyrule Warriors for a more modern, “angrier” theme. Captain Toad is cute and whimsical too. Little King’s Story has remixes of classical music, mostly Mozart iirc.

Yep! Skyrim and other sandbox games where it’s just the exploration themes are great- and because I didn’t/don’t play video games except a lot of Sims and Final Fantasy, i don’t have memories attached to the soundtracks to distract me.  Which is why I don’t usually pick movie scores.

Oh, Mozart! fun!

Ah well, I asked bc DOGS, and the story seemed to me like something you’d like, but if you’re not into him then you’re not into him I guess :T alas!

Confession- when I heard the title, it made me think of Plague Dogs (same author as Watership Down, I’ve been warned about it).

Aa~ The very first movie i ever saw in theaters was my mom taking me when i was less than three to see Milo and Otis.  Most of teh tiem I do avoid dog movies, as they’re schlepy ‘Hallmark’ type “Because of Winne-Dixie” or “Marley and Me’. I am trying not to get interested in Alpha because, yeah, movie dramatization of first domestication of dog; i’d be obliged to either hate it or love it.

Hey Heget, can you rank the descendants of Thingol and Melian down to Elros and Elrond from your most favorite down? ;)

Okay okay, I can do this. I suck at ranking favorites, but it’s only a few generations, so here is goes:

  1. Lúthien
  2. Elwing
  3. Dior
  4. Elros
  5. Elrond
  6. Elured and Elurin solely because we get so little of them

The next generation down I have to put Arwen first, but second would actually be Vardamir, because I love the idea of a ‘nah, I’m an astronomer, ruling as king is too much hassle and not worth it’.

But like, the whole family is gorgeous and powerful and wise and plus Olwë and Ingwë, winners of the ‘I’d vote for you as my king’ award.

Oohh you prolly know this already but the soundtrack of shadow of the Colossus is wonderful and kinda epic and melancholic at the same time (always makes me think of the CoH idk ;-;)… I like the OST of the assassination of Jesse James, and the OST of nocturnal animals…. Btw unrelated but did you watch isle of dogs? 🙂

Ooo- I don’t think I’ve listened to that one- or maybe a long time ago. I actually started writing the current project with Unravel’s OST and that’s been good. Yay, recs!

No, I haven’t. But then, I think The Royal Tenabaums is the only Wes Anderson film I’ve actually seen. (I know, I know) Visually I see clips of his other movies like Grand Budapest Hotel and they look interesting, but him as a director and writer doesn’t appeal to me. There’s a ‘quirky man writing hipster literature’ vibe to him that just slightly off-putting to me. Probably unwarranted, but I’m not enthused about him. Have a sister that loves his films.

Haven’t gone to the movies all summer, even though there were films I wanted to see and I have a really cheap theater close by.
