one of the things I especially enjoyed about this episode- that’s been present in all episodes thus far, but it stuck out to me this week- is how much we saw various women emotionally supporting and helping each other. A lot of the time, it was very low-key, like Kitty standing beside Harriet while Margaret bartered for the children, for instance- but the fact that it was essentially treated as a default was amazing to me. (And of course, the character work they’ve done up to this point helps a lot- we know, for instance, that Kitty has a daughter who she supports financially but doesn’t live with, and that gives us the context to understand why she might have extra sympathy for Harriet’s plight.) In a media landscape where women are so often pitted against each other, especially in period drama, it’s refreshing to see a show that treats female solidarity like a given, and goes through with demonstrating it in its writing and directing choices.
