and for meme #2, I recommend Heget’s fanfiction for anyone who likes their fic to be written by someone who is conversant in canon enough that any deviations are very deliberately in response to the canon work rather than being haphazard or simply because they don’t like something. She follows in the footsteps of Tolkien by filling in the margins, and she does so masterfully, with cultural tidbits and OCs who fit the world so well you’d believe they were canon if you didn’t know otherwise.

Canon-like without being slavishly devoted to it is, I think, the goal of any fanfic writer, Tone-wise with the writing I canā€™t come close to capturing the feel. Read too much HoMe to be haphazard about canon sounds about right lol And one of the main purposes of fanfic is to explore the margins!

*pulls dryope aside, whispers* all those IngwĆ« of CuiviĆØnen fics are explicitly because I didnā€™t like canon Unbegotten elves or that FinwĆ«, Elu, and IngwĆ« would have been such. Okay, I wiggled and bent the fuzzy canon to disprove that and then tried to beat the myth/fairy tale into submission with science while screaming in vain. Or BEST AU EVAR.

ā‹ and āœ½ and ā§ and ā¦ I mean to be fair I love everything about your fic so picking only a few was difficult, but the reason I was drawn to your fic in the first place is how you fill in the blanks and wander around hidden corridors in a way that is at the same time creative, delightful, and canon compliant. You make Arda seem that much more real to enough of an extent that I consider you part of my personal ME canon :P #shameless fangirl

And such a lovely description- yes it does feel like Iā€™m walking through the servantsā€™ corridors and into the unused rooms, through the doors that donā€™t get as often used. Those always lead to the good rooms, the ones with the cool artifacts. And then I drag back my treasures for show-and-tell. Hey, highest praise is to have my headcanon adopted in as other peopleā€™s canon too. šŸ˜€

Hi! I just wanted to say thank you for your Vanyar and Indis posts, because when I first read the Silm, I had the very distinct impression of Indis as very sun-bleached, very tan, and quite buff. I’m not saying she could probably bench-press Miriel, but… okay yes I am saying that. And I had forgotten that after I dipped my toe into fandom. So thank you!

Thank you! Not just for the message but taking the time to send to my inbox. Yes, Indis Appreciation! ā™„ā™„ā™„ She was one of the first characters in the Silm that I fell in love with, and I hunted through HoME for more info about her. So tall, buff, very athletic Indis is very canon (as opposed to slender petite MĆ­riel).

And any positive focus on the Vanyar is always a good thing – they deserve it šŸ˜‰

M’dear, I am a willing audience for any rant you need to get off your chest (and often I am but the choir you are preaching to). By the way, to everyone else, I will gladly play bartender and listen to rants even for fandoms I don’t know (“So what did hĆ¼rrem do this episode?”) and I try to always be a safe and considerate ear. My first impression of you as a beacon of sweet sanity with a kind attitude even to those with less grace and respect has not changed.

Have I mentioned recently how happy I am that you read the Vorkosigan series? Have I forewarned you that having discovered you are amiable to SF, my ambition is to convince you to read one of the other long series like Belisarius, Honor Harrington, Prince Roger, etc..? (I have all of Baen CD download links, this is no idle threat) And that I will gladly discuss and fan over Vorkosigan with you and am delightfully happy with every Kareen and Alys themed post you write? (Also, I forget if you have or not read the three Chalion books yet. STRONG rec)

And to everyone else, thank you for putting up with my evening of self-pity. I truly desire that everyone is having a pleasant and stress-free evening (or morning, whatever timezone) and what little I can do to distract another person for a moment from any negative with something amusing or thoughtful or what-have-you, that is something i consider a battle won.
