• arguing the merits of genocide with a ghost – damn the dialogue is so good
• “don’t leave me”- just everything in those scenes with Jenny, Perry, and Steve. I remember watching this in the theater and just..feels
• the three plot threads of the battle have to narratively sink to the lowest part until Kal does his parting the Red Sea and stands up to the World Engine
• “Krypton had its chance”
• And here comes Faora
• She is coming for Hardy
• same, girl
• (Phantom Zone adventures of Faora and Hardy – like even just a teaser of a rumor of the two of them fighting through Warworld off-screen in a hypothetical Green Lanterns space cop adventure film)
• the dialogue everyone rags on but Lois’s ‘all downhill from here’ = ‘i’m cynical but with you maybe i can embrace hope’ and Clark’s ‘i’m an alien and i still don’t know what that means in the greater context of how i can interact with others who know my secret and the wider world’s acceptance/will you accept and embrace all of me?

• Did not understand that there was a hard no-kill rule for Superman and that this so very remorseful but necessary death (seriously, what cheap cop-out did they want?) would be so controversial. It’s a standard story point
• Lois cradling Clark after that scream of anguish – oh gods ship it
• is it because the story makes it clear this is a bittersweet victory for Clark?
• If the character  felt it was more of a win, was not so shaken about Zod’s death, I feel paradoxically the audience would find it as controversial
• this last flashback scene with Johnathon looking on proudly – my heart~
• the last scene- clark on his bike, inspired by Lois, puts on the glasses
• “Welcome to the Planet”

• the gravity floating rocks around the fist – like no wonder The Last Jedi copied it
• zoom zoom around the world
• then the joy of reaching up
• the sonic boom as we/he leaves and back to Real Journalist Best Detective Lois Lane

Re-watching Man of Steel – live blog thoughts:

• The opening scene music- the entire soundtrack, is so good
• i love the creative customization of opening logos – in this case Kryptonian writing in the same geometal gray.
• Very prequel Star Wars space opera unique alien planet visuals opening shots and that appeals to my aesthetics
• Zod. Zod is the standard I judge villains against
• australopithecus-like skull for our SF Genetic Noah’s Ark? Yes
• House of El citadel looks like an observatory
• Lara has more to do and more agency in this movie than any other Superman media I was/am familiar with
• Lara = Jochebed
• The lines here from Jor-el and Lara

• the Lex Luthor like power-suits Jor-el is wearing is hilarious
• “Lara, abort the launch!” Followed by the biggest nonverbal ‘Fuck you, asshole, I don’t listen to you’ on-screen short of videotaping a cat
• Faora’s pompadour
• the shot of the Black Zero prison hovering down in the bright orange sunset is amazing
• alien geometries is the cliche phrase I want to use to describe so much of the details behind Krypton
• then the music shifts and the mourning and the sheer gall to show the destruction of Krypton from Lara watching it happen- no clinical distance watching Alderaan explode, we’re on the beach of Scarif to extend our SW metaphor

• clark’s face when Ludlow shoves him. ‘Seriously, dude?’
• still smile when sexual harasser gets his truck so beautifully, epically wrecked

• the eerie undercurrent alien notes with the low booms – the soundtrack stresses this is an Alien SF movie and I love it
• the camera shot of a hand holding an object and someone crawling up into frame from a hole (usually from a body of water) – I better get one of those shots in JL too
• …we were all thinking it with the internal bleeding surgery scene
