#sigh every time i see references to gilrael i think of grrm#and him being asked by fans about ned stark’s mother and getting annoyed and all ‘did anyone ever ask about aragorn’s mother’#no grrm lotr fans didn’t *need* to ask because tolkien frickin’ *told* them about aragorn’s mother tyvm#oh grrm

Not only that but we know more about Gilrean’s parents than we do Arathorn’s, not just both(!) names. We have dialogue from Dírhael worried that his daughter was too young to marry, and he had an inkling Arathorn would die young. To which his wife Ivorwen overruled with her own foresight that, “The more need of haste! The days are darkening before the storm, and great things are to come. if these two wed now, hope may be born for our people; but if they delay, it will not come while this age lasts”

Ugh~ Gilrean goes into this marriage knowing. Knowing it is fated to be short-lived, and that she will bear the hope for the Dúnedain, what is riding on her son’s shoulders before he is even conceived.
