Trying to avoid the obvious candidates, so: Círdan!

  • favorite thing about them

Here’s one of the most important elves in the entire universe. He’s not a king or son of a king, and though he does fight, why is he important? He builds ships. He ensures that others have ships in which to travel places. Ships are really important, just as important if not more important in a positive cultural way than all that cursed gems and jewelry littering Middle-earth. Fuck yeah, Shipwright!

  • least favorite thing about them

uh the ring stuff maybe? that he gets a beard but then Tolkien says old elves get beards but then never mentions beards on the elves that would likely be as old as Círdan so this still feels plothole-ish to this day

  • favorite line

“I will dwell by the grey shores until the last ship sails.

  • brOTP

Him and Elu, the absolute sense of history and how Círdan is the one to send the heads up that hey, these new empire builders are lying to our faces but I don’t have confirmation and all so check their references. Him and Finrod. Not the biggest Gandalf ‘stan but they cool

  • OTP

Círdan is very ace to me. If I have to think of him in a romantic-coded relationship, it’s a poly relationship with Ossë and Uinen

  • nOTP

Gil-galad. That’s his son.

  • random headcanon

aside from the sigil, even keeping Gil-galad as Fingon’s son, I don’t imagine any close friendship between him and Fingon, but Círdan was close to Gil-galad’s Sindarin mother and especially Finrod is playing intermediary. He sleeps in a hammock and modern vibes would be either a grizzled warm Maine lighthouse keeper or a chill Jimmy Buffett listening Florida Keys retiree

  • unpopular opinion

I don’t like him with long beards, keep it under a foot. Also that head-canon interpretation that he was in any way negative towards the Valar is projecting

  • song i associate with them

Not a single song itself, because then I’m talking Elu or Elmo, but bands like Lord Huron, Fleet Foxes, Ben Howard. Any modern nuFolk

  • favorite picture of them

This one is particularly fun

@crocordile tagged for the last line meme (and between them and bekka, most everyone has been tagged. Here’s the latest two:

As a child, Gadwar found his brother’s adherence to rules and justice vexing, for he could do no mischief within his brother’s presence. No sneaking of sweets, no innocent lies, no shirking of lessons to go play with Galuven as watchful nursemaid.

Go to your current work in progress and share the following:

  • The first line of the work.
  • The first line of your current chapter (or if it’s a one-shot, the first line of the tenth paragraph).
  • The last line you wrote.
  • A line for a chapter/part you haven’t written yet.

So current work is the mermaid story interlude from the original story slush pile:

First Line: “Boy, get up here!”

First Line Current/Tenth Line Overall: Amabel started guffawing.

Urwin whispered the phrase ‘Pure Ones’, which scared Gislin, but then Amabel grabbed the young man’s hand and pulled his attention back to her.

Last Line Written: “In battle the brothers were terrible foes, and Garabel no less a force. The war was not swift, nor clean, but by the end their enemies drowned.”

Not Written Yet:  “Why is Hirabel here?” I ask myself, only I am fool enough to say it aloud, and fool enough to say it loud enough for another to hear me.

5: Do you think stories can change lives? Is there a story that has changed yours?

Yes, not to be facetious, but that’s the point of stories. Human behavior and all that. Now personally, I can’t say any single life-changing one in particular, no pithy anecdote, but a cripplingly shy introverted girl constantly moving around, difficult to make friends, with family that to call them stressful would be an understatement and some undiagnosed mental something or other of my own – the escape and distraction that well-loved stories have saved my life and my sanity time and again. Example- waiting to hear the whereabouts of my suicidal sister (she had checked herself into a clinic without telling anyone, this story has a happy ending) in the middle of the night, so I turned to my Kindle to re-read one of the Ring of Fire books to take my mind off my powerlessness.

6: What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to writing?

When I’m reading fics, spelling and grammar typos- especially the homophones- if they get too numerous to the point that I can’t ignore them, then that’s a pet peeve. And not indenting a new paragraph for a new speaker of dialogue. That’s a definite pet peeve, to have two direct quotations spoken dialogue from two characters and having them in the same paragraph. Bad characterization or plot is more fundamentally structural than the word ‘peeve’ suggests.

Referring to a character solely by hair color and a suffux like -ette. The blonde. brunette, pinkette, greenette. I hate that. If they include a noun and thus the hair color is just an adjective, it doesn’t bug me, but any time someone is addressed in noun form via hair color, I hate it.

18: Are you a ‘neatly designed outline’ writer or a ‘fuck it i’ll figure it out as i go’ writer?

…a little of both but more the second? For some of my original stories, especially back in high school and college, the outlines would be plotted to each individual interlude. I often write scenes out of order, or plan ahead some key points and thus have to improvise how the plot and characters get from point a to point c or point f. Writing shorter one-shots means I’m often writing as I go.

@crocordile tagged me for a ten favorite female characters from ten different fandoms. And as loathe as I am to try to single out a favorite, here are some answers:

  1. Lúthien from Silmarillion (she has stiff competition, but she is queen)
  2. Stephanie Brown from DC Batman (DC as a whole might be Jessica Cruz)
  3. Shallan from The Stormlight Archives
  4. Nynaeve al’Meara from Wheel of Time
  5. Padmé Amidala from Star Wars
  6. Catelyn Tully from A Song of Ice and Fire (Jeyne Poole is second)
  7. Princess Allura from Voltron: Legendary Defender
  8. Makimachi Misao from Rurouni Kenshin
  9. Nimue Alban/Merlin Athrawes from Safehold (Look, the character starts of as identifying female, and with the second Nimue, they still count)
  10. Sabriel from Abhorsen

I wish you would write a fic with Círdan and/or Elwing and/or Eärendil…

The Fëanorians had torched Elwing and Eärendil’s house. Círdan tried not to feel surprised at that, watching the black charred remains of what had been rafters, beams, and furniture slowly smolder and collapse in the harsh shore breeze. All the embers had cooled by now, and he knew he could approach the ruins of what had been the house of his dear friends (adopted niece and nephew, yet another war orphan he had taken in as his own). He feared approaching, worried that it will be more than burned wood he would find in the wreckage. His men, searching the other buildings, had already found bodies. Elven and mortal, male and female, old and young, every sort imaginable. Círdan did not wish confirmation of which he would find in this house. The Fëanorians had burned the docks. That he was not surprised at, for they had no more use for ships, or at least still had the self-awareness that no boat upon these waves would tolerate them. Still, Círdan knew one ship was not present, and thus one body he shall not find.

And, staring at the charred ruins of the home of Elwing and her young children, for the first and only time, Círdan fervently prayed that Vingilot had foundered upon the waves. The Shipwright wished this betrayal of his craft. Let not the lad return to this, he prayed. Better he dies, drowns in a storm, not seeing the destruction of his home, the death of his people. Never have asked this of you, Lord Ossë, oh, how Círdan wept, but never allow him to return to this shore, when this sorrow is all that awaits him.

The Wolves by Ben Howard

Watching from both sides, these clock towers burning up,
I lost my time here, i lost my patience with it all.
And we lost faith, in the arms of love.

Genghis Khan by Miike Snow *

I get a little bit Genghis Khan
Don’t want you to get it on
With nobody else but me
With nobody else but me

*It’s an annoying ear worm but it came up in the shuffle, so, eh, the repeated ad nauseum chorus

White Flag by Bishop Briggs

Patience is wearing thin, paper thin
Promises broke again, what a sin
But it only feeds my energy
So don’t expect no sympathy

Smoke, fire, it’s all going up
Don’t you know I ain’t afraid to shed a little blood?
Smoke, fire, flares are going up, flares are going up

Paparazzi by Lady Gaga **

I’m your biggest fan
I’ll follow you until you love me

** Not a fav Gaga song, so shrug emoji

Broken Crown by Mumford & Sons

…okay, there’s a lot of lines from this I love- and more than one version of this song (”To Darkness”) with additional lyrics.

Touch my mouth
And hold my tongue
I’ll never be your chosen one

I will not speak of your sin
There was no way out for him

But oh, my heart was flawed
I knew my weakness
So hold my hand
Consign me not to darkness

I’ll never wear your broken crown

In this twilight, how dare you speak of grace

Champion by Barns Courtney

Woah Lord, set my soul
Take my pain and turn it into gold

Blood on My Name by The Brothers Bright

There’s a reckonin’ a-comin’
And it burns beyond the grave
Lead inside my belly
‘cause my soul has lost its way

Oh, Lazarus
How did your debts get paid?
Oh, Lazarus
Were you so afraid?

That a prophet would be grieved

Ophelia by The Lumineers

Oh, Ophelia, heaven help a fool who falls in love

And I don’t feel nothing at all
And you can’t feel nothing small

Honey I love you, that’s all she wrote

Favorite Color is Blue by Robert DeLong

I’m out of control, live in a fictional prose
I took an oath, it’s killing me though
‘Cause I don’t believe in the things that I do

Roped up, rat in a cage

Drinking at a playground, tequila for one

You say that you’re here, but
You live on the Sun

I’m at a funeral, nothing unusual

Taking a bite, worm in the apple
I knew it would happen, ’cause honey the vermin survive

Suit and Jacket by Judah & the Lion

I ain’t trading my youth for no suit and jacket
I ain’t giving my freedom for your money and status

And I ain’t giving this fire for a cold, cold heart

Vibes: Smart, done w/all the BS

…I am fandom old (the vast majority of those early years were lurking – I was on LJ but not following any fannish blogs except capslock!Bleach (best. Memes.) but I read all the Mugglenet meta essays and saw the HP (and other fandom) ship wars from my seat in the bleachers. I rest inside my Girdle, having spent my time in the Silm fandom trenches (with all that implies; there are certain viewpoints and discourses of which I am DONE).
As for the ‘smart’, well, thank goodness. I’d hate to give off the opposite impression, but I know the typos and silliness and lack of serious meta posts do hinder that.
