Your specialty as a fic author: delicious, well-thought-out headcanons and backstories for minor characters.

Thank you, lovely anon, for this answer!

..not sure if the use of the specific adjective “delicious” is a direct reference to the Elwing is introduced to Falmari cuisine fic, because my gut feeling says it is. And minor characters (and OCs) are probably my bread and butter, though in my defense, I have written fics centered around Elu Thingol, who despite fandom prejudices, is one of the most central characters in the Silm and probably has some of the most page time second only to Morgoth – so it’s not only minor characters. Ah, who am I kidding? Characters so minor they don’t even have names, and I rush out like Batman seeing an orphan with crime-fighting potential to adopt them.

tagged by @heckofabecca. Favorites meme. Oh crap. I can’t do these because I am indecisive and picky – I can say what I like at a given moment and what I decidedly dislike, but concrete favorites…..

name: classified

nicknames: online? heget

zodiac sign: Virgo

height: 5′0″(5′1″ give me this)

nationality: American. I was born in Washington D.C., I think I get extra USA points for that

favorite fruit: used to be Granny Smith apples, uh, watermelon

favorite season: What geographic location are we talking about? Back up in the Mid-Atlantic East Coast or Pacific Northwest, it might be summer. Here in South Texas? Early spring around March is when bluebonnets start appearing all over the hillsides, but then September is Hawk Migration and November is when it finally starts noticeably cooling off. Sub-tropics autumn is not the fall you see posts about with fancy changing leaves and crisp cold weather (heck winter is still averaging in the mid 60s-70s) But then while I like the spring and fall seasons- those are also when my sinus infections hit hardest. Okay, look, any season where the high heat plus humidity isn’t completely intolerable when stepping outside (so, like, under 98°F) and it isn’t cold (under 55°F SHUT UP THAT”S COLD)

favorite book: fuuu- you don’t get to do that to me. I can’t even answer favorite book series for a specific genre

favorite flower: ooooh. Honeysuckle, dendrobium orchids, gladiolus…

favorite scent: rain

favorite color: Navy blue, aqua green and turquoise, coral and deep reds and also pumpkin orange, forest and olive greens, whites and rich browns, only a certain shade of pink, some purples- I like neutrals and jewel tones more than pastels and loathe neons

favorite animal: Siamese cats and certain sight hounds

coffee | tea | hot cocoa: sugary creamer with coffee (my coffee is usually the color of cardboard), sweet teas (with lemonade and only about half as sweet as usual Southern Sweet tea)

average sleep hours: …6? But I nap during the day on weekends, and sometimes I get 9 hours. But 6-7 sounds about right.

cat or dog person: Look, a whippet acts more like a cat than a dog and a siamese is not a typical cat. I want that animal that behavioral wise is some weird hybrid

favourite fictional character: AHAHAHA … please don’t ask for a real answer for this one

number of blankets you sleep with: I have a giant throw blanket that i usually sleep cocooned in on-top of my comforter, I’m weird. Only when it gets cold enough do I sleep under the comforter and sheets

blog created: 2013

number of followers: Discounting pornbots and the like? It hovers under 350 so the real number is probably at most 300

random fact: I wear bifocals and have worn glasses since I was five. Um, I only have piercings on my earlobes, no tattoo or desire for one, and I have never permanently dyed my hair or permed it. (as aggravating as it can be, my hair is also my vanity and it’s a very rich brown that’s almost black and has- when it behaving- beautiful curls)

For the meme if I’m not too late: Since I’m currently reading Immortals, Tamora Pierce?

YAY more meme requests – these are always open/no expiration date

Okay disclaimer I read most of the books in middle school, re-read a few of them maybe five or six years ago, my memory especially of Kel’s later books is really hazy. And I’ll stick to Tortall even if I rather liked the first four Circle of Magic books more as a kid.

  • Favorite character: Thayet
  • Second favorite character: DoveTeky from the short story collection, Faithful isn’t Mogget but talking cat adviser yes!, Buri
  • Least favorite character: Roger,
  • The character I’m most like: *shrugs*
  • Favorite pairing: I guess Alanna/George
  • Least favorite pairing: Numair/Diane. HATE teacher/student and the age gap, plus while I love raised by wolves magic girl (starting with Julie of the Wolves and Jungle Book -have I mentioned I spend my summers when I was 8 and 9 reading that book to survive summer camp?- and on to Firekeeper) Diane herself while being every trope I usually loved, she was by far my least favorite Tortall protagonist and uuuuugh~ Numair
  • Favorite moment: Stormwings gonna tell you what it is Diane and then later they are here to stay. The Girl the Kicks like an Ostrich short story, Beka’s plots are good mystery novels
  • Rating out of 10: for YA novels they are really good, so 7/10. Beka’s first person pov lowers it, Diane’s books while more pure fantasy are I feel the weakest written, Lioness Quartet is dated, Kel’s the slice-of-life is perfect, the bigger plot stuff – it’s telling that I don’t remember any of it. But nostalgia inflates it all high.

DCU (Or just Batman, if you’d rather)

Okay we’re going to narrow it down to Batfam, and narrow it down further into that weird Post-Crisis/Rebirth/decent fanon or we’d be here all night. (Conversely I could stick to individual books I’m following like Green Lanterns or New Super-man or the YJ tv show)

  • Favorite character: Jason Todd
  • Second favorite character: tie between Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain
  • Least favorite character: Joker, if we deal only with Batfam members: Gary Stu!Batman, Barbara Gordon- nu52/Rebirth version holds no interest for me. Post Crisis she’s growing on me as Cassandra’s adopted mother figure and she filled a great narrative niche as Oracle/BoP leader (a foil Amanda Waller?), Harper Row, Gotham Boy or w/e his name was
  • The character I’m most like: I hate these questions. uh … a less awesome Alfred
  • Favorite pairing: Bruce/Selina, Dick/Kori
  • Least favorite pairing: again, ignoring rogues: Bruce/his kids, Damian with anyone not his own age (young teenagers romantically paired with adults, even with the excuse of they grew up and the older person can now think of them as romantically viable is a disliked trope that also explains why Dickbabs can be a NOTP) I hate the most popular Damian ships pre nu52
  • Favorite moment: Stephanie slapping Bruce Jason’s backstory, original or gorgeous art Rebirth version – street kid jacks almost all of the Batmobile’s tires, is confronted by Batman and hits him with a tire iron he has no fear this sassy kid, doesn’t want to be a criminal just doing what he has to to survive, causes Batman to smile/laugh on the anniversary and at the location of his parents’ deaths, Batman has a son
  • Rating out of 10: it’s a goddamn mess I shouldn’t rate it above a five, but my heart says 7/10

Okay because I want to gush about them – Green Lanterns (I haven’t read all the issues yet)

  • Favorite character: Simon Baz/Jessica Cruz (you can’t make me pick one over the other)
  • Second favorite character: Rami grew on me, Dexstar the Cat is the best damn comic idea ever
  • Least favorite character: Volthoom
  • The character I’m most like: Jess
  • Favorite pairing: platonic or romantic SimonJess, Nasir/Sira
  • Least favorite pairing: Barry/Jess
  • Favorite moment: Simon coming over to make Jess pancakes and apologize- plus that entire issue showing how Jess’s anxiety is a daily struggle, Simon trying to heal the leader of the Red Lantern of his rage Jess punching Guy out
  • Rating out of 10: 9/10. great characters, a good introduction into Green Lantern stories without being a complete starting from scratch

Your opinion on jeans

Long personal body appearance and wardrobe choices rant

So I wear jeans a lot, obviously, but not actually as often as one would think. In the summer I have several pairs of jean shorts that are bermuda/board length. Only recently (as in last year/year before) have I bought shorts that are actually short shorts instead of cut-offs and capris. – I tend to not have too many capri-lengths because I’m so very much a petite person- barely more than five feet tall and fooling myself to thinking I am more than a hundred lbs (quick conversion = 1.5 m and 45 kg, ish) – my body-type is technically hourglass but my hips are narrow and my bust is small and my rib-cage worse- I am that very boney skinny bitch. If it wasn’t for how short I am, which eliminates a lot of clothes like maxi dresses and certain cuts of capris, I could get away with being far more daring in my clothing choices than I am. Like, objectively, I should think that I have great legs and should be showing them off and why aren’t I wearing booty shorts in the these 110°F heat index weather (today’s outside temp was only 92 = 33°C, but the heat index was higher)? But. Thick dark brown hair also means body hair and so I’m very self-conscious about showing skin.

I don’t wear jeans at work and ironically when I want to lounge around my house doing laundry and not going outside, to be super comfortable, is when I wear all my various cotton sundresses and skirts. Jeans and a t-shirt for me is weirdly a level or two above ‘super-causal heget as her most relaxed’.

Now petite and not liking the super-skinny trend (gah that’s annoying to put on and I have a few pairing of colored jeggings I wear under certain long shirts but mostly leggings are what I wear in the winter as a layer under my jeans or dress slacks for warmth like long underwear) means that’s it’s hard for me to find a pair and style I like (bootcut and I like low-rise more than highcut in general) means that it’s very hard to find jeans that I wouldn’t need to hem at least four inches from the bottom. When I do, I buy in bulk and then have to wait up to 10 years to go jean shopping again. (That ten years is not exaggerating- I finally bought new full-length jeans this spring and I think the last time I bought jeans I was in college?) I refuse to buy pre-distressed or acid-wash or any of that- that prudish purtain in me hates that people pay money for jeans with holes in them. Also I prefer dark denim, especially the really dark pure blues. But almost never have had black denim jeans, which is weird because my work clothes are almost all: decent shirt + black dress slacks (or the lone medium gray).

So what colors besides medium and dark denim? I have a hunter green and a royal-ish blue and a pair of coral pink capris and the pale aqua jeggings, am looking for the right shade of red. I’ve very proud I’m adding color to my pants, slowly but surely. Oh, and some white and beige but not in jeans.

Uhhh, what else?

Okay, historical notes! Denim jeans are really cool because they’re older than people think and my very first real research paper for school in the fifth grade (ten years old) was about the San Francisco Gold Rush of ‘49 and I had a paragraph about jean pants as we know them with the rivet enforced pockets became popularized because of the prospectors (also the early versions were very much a popular sailors’ garment)

meeeeeemes. your opinion on neopets!

meeeeme asksssss! [giddy dance]

oh hahha okay confession time- my little sister played neopets causally back in..2002 or so? And I can’t remember if I made an account or or not but I remember she had some of the cute little critters and I know the sand/egyptian play theme had been up for a while and there was paintbrushes she wanted (one of the fairy ones?), but it was expensive, and there was a cheat for free food involving the soup kitchen. I don’t know how long she played it, but I know I only played attention for about a month. I can recognize a lot of the older critters if not by name, and I’m fond of these mostly free-to-play time-wasting virtual pet games, even if nowadays its more NekoAtsume and Pokemon Go (No, i don’t play PokemonGo though said sister and my mom are really into it minus any of the gym/fighting aspect). (Yes I have NekoAtsume on my kindle because I can check it every few days on lunch break and it’s cute without the guilt impulse to be constantly on-the-ball). But all the Neopets’ lore and fan community stuff and everything, I know there’s supposedly a big thing and the website got retooled – but idk *shrug emoji*

Me and MMORPGs and that community gameplay style and forums aren’t really a thing.

Hmm, I feel like maybe I should shift gears slightly and pick something that isn’t a Silm fic, just so I’m not repeating myself, but I haven’t touched even half the other fics and lines/concepts that those lines embody that I like (I really love this meme and similar ones – if there is a Silm fic or other writing of mine you want commentary or my opinion of what I liked most/disliked, ask away!)

A hero could carry such a name, though, and Bân wanted to be a hero. All he wanted was to have been a hero.

Nan Dungortheb, and all the death it had been rightfully named for, Beren gave no details of, and yet of his twelve companions only Consael could with experience guess at some of the horrors Beren had overcome.

“Come here,” the voice commands. This time the underlying sternness spoils the sweetness. The fingers of her outstretched hands twitch and curl inward like spider jaws.

The boy gave a smile less steady than its predecessors, yet one more honest, as Elwê crouched down so he was no longer looming over the much shorter elf. Elwê smiled back. “I like listening to you.

Okay, so going by kudos my most popular work by far is Whatcha Gonna Call It?, so I figure it was about time to point out what are MY favorite lines from that fic.

There’s a dry, wry sarcastic tone that I tried to convey and I guess was successful, the authorial voice heavily influenced by Pratchett and Tolkien at points during The Hobbit. So the second line was my hint that we’re sliding into my snark of which I usually write my informal posts but not so often my actual fics.

Everyone had already exhausted all the thorny or offensive or just plain unanswerable questions like why Aegnor married a mortal and was that even possible or ethical or physically possible.

Next up is this line:

Having his prudent advice ignored, their big brother Finrod down in Nargothrond was now writing letters to all the Wise-women of the three Edain tribes and the philosophers among the Eldar (which consisted mostly of Finrod himself, two advisers of Thingol, and one loremaster living with Fingolfin – the majority of the Noldor either uninterested in esoteric questions of soul, especially strange mortal ones, or had stayed behind in Aman to begin with) to bring together in a colloquy to discuss the impact of the first marriage of immortal to mortal and any possible changes or transfers in the nature of their bodies and souls.

Plus the later “Finrod’s colloquy by correspondence side-tracked into tangents”  I am proud of for working in the word colloquy twice and because colloquy by correspondence is just a delightful term of phrase. And I get to tangentially ramble on world-building, obliquely insinuate that all the level-headed and intelligent Noldor with foresight and actual wisdom didn’t follow Fëanor’s rebellion, highlight Athrabeth’s stressing of Finrod going about the wise people of the Edain for decades to learn from them and its definitions of soul, body, and the relationships between them and that they are not the same for elves and mortal men. And then the following lines nod to a fun fanfic from years ago that hypothesized (humorously) that Círdan’s beard was because Durin’s missing bride was an elf and Círdan had a twin brother that stayed to become the next king while Círdan left and has been pretending to be a full Eldar this whole time.

Other fun lines:

Secretly, Angrod wondered if this whole mess should have been a surprise, for Aegnor had assimilated to the Bëorians in Ladros more rapidly than their sister had to Doriath. Every morning Angrod checked his brother for sign of stubble on his cheek or gray hairs, for that was the inevitable next step after learning the mortal tongue, drinking mortal beer and eating that mortal food dish involving stuffing animal organs with more meat, wearing mortal clothing, staying in mortal halls, and falling in love with a mortal woman.

Bëorian haggis you will pry from my cold dead fingers

The newness and uncertainty of the situation worried everyone but Cousin Lúthien, who refused to understand the fuss. She existed, did not she?

(Lúthien is a benevolent steamroller of confidence and good heart. Diana from the recent WW movie is actually pretty close to how I’d characterize her, if you replaced her adoration of her aunt Antiope and wanting to be a warrior with idolizing her mother in her role as queen and the Amazonian healers and senators. A little less naivety of the cruelty and moral grayness outside her sheltered kingdom but the same general belief that people are inherently good except for the gods/forces of evil who she will curb-stomp)

Finrod, however, was physically nowhere near Dorthonion and thus unable to intercede between the fight. Wise of him, Angrod thought.

My Angrod loves but resents his big brother, because my Angrod has his hands full managing his younger brother and kingdom and allies. Lots of snarky ‘no, we’re fine up here, I don’t need your help [mutters under breath] you’re so far away it’s not like you’d get here in time to be useful for our current problem anyway’

Angrod held Edhellos, breathing in the scent of his wife’s hair and shaking with his own fear. He knew if Andreth or the babe did not survive the birth, his brother would blame himself and along with most of Beleriand take it as a sign of Ilúvatar’s proscription against such a union. Aegnor would chose death by grief then.

There has to be a dark, angst, sad moment in a humor fic, a point where the joke becomes real, before it can switch back to seriousness. And here’s the seed of the truly dark AU that stillbirths any more peredhil unions, because this would have undoubtedly be interpreted as Eru banning elven/mortal relationships. This is darker to me than a Morgoth wins scenario, tbh.

Bregor opened the window so the light of the sunrise could illuminate a glowing Aegnor and his newborn daughter

jfc I am unsubtle with my symbolism

He still called her Nómwen, to the disapproval of the girl’s parents.

Got to end on a snarky note
