first of all – that’s NOT russian book! the author is Lois McMaster Bujold she’s not russian (don’t confuse me plz, because rn I’m reading the actual russian scifi book about soviet interplanetaries on Venus, and it’s very different books and I never drew fanarts of it)
book I lie. wut? ok ok I get what you were trying to say, there he is –
Miles, ladies and gentlemen!
hey hey it’s “Brothers in Arms” reference, did you get it did you get it???? 😀
The logistics of the War of Wrath are pretty interesting if you think about them. I was wondering about what exactly the Teleri were doing for those fifty years besides being very bored when I remembered all those refugees on Balar. I’m not sure if Tolkien states exactly how fast Beleriand sunk but I think it was a gradual process throughout the war rather than all at once at the end. So you’ve got a slowly disappearing island and a lot of people who need somewhere to go but the mainland isn’t a safe place and the Teleri have a lot of room on their ships…
Basically, imagine the Teleri and Edain refugees. Generations of them, living and dying on their ships. Water burial becoming a custom because what else can you do. Tiny grubby kids who love the elves and are loved by them despite both thinking they look kind of strange. Elves visiting Numenor and finding descendants of that kid who wouldn’t get out of the crow’s nest (it was one time, please stop telling that story, Lady Earwen).
When discussing what asoiaf characters belong in Gryffindor to come to mind, we think of Asha Greyjoy, Jon Snow, Robb Stark, Stannis Baratheon, Jaime Lannister. I’d like to propose another one: Joffrey Baratheon, who should be added to the list. I did consider putting him in Slytherin, but I ultimately put him in the protagonists’ house. Because…
XDDD well I’m sure he wouldn’t sell anything with personal meaning, or like the Nauglamir (I mean I would kill to get all the behind-the-scenes on that Sotheby’s auction, but).
It is how he financed Nargothrond, though, so presumably he’d have assorted things that he didn’t mind selling – I actually get really grumpy about the fandom insistence that he’s a gaudy peacock with all his jewels, when what carrying jewels across the Helcaraxe really shows is that he actually planned ahead and was prepared for building a life in Middle-earth.
Historically, when banking wasn’t an option, you bought jewelry, since it could be counted on to hold its value reasonably well but also could be transported or liquidated relatively easily. Land isn’t portable or easily liquidatable, and currency could be devalued or not accepted outside of the region it originated in. His jewelry may not have helped while they were crossing the Grinding Ice, but it also wouldn’t have slowed them down, and once in Middle-earth it means Finrod has the wealth he needs to establish Nargothrond and maintain the largest kingdom in Beleriand.
And now I want Finrod being really clever with his wealth and infuriating Caranthir and Curufin because he always comes out ahead and they cannot figure out how he does it while still making everyone happy and being ridiculously generous. And possibly Finrod reinventing a banking system and coinage in Beleriand. Okay I just want Finrod-centric First Age macroeconomics fic I really like macroeconomics >.> Someday I’ll study more about historical macroeconomics, there have to be books about this.
This is perfect (and the second paragraph = yes! Finrod as the one with the most foresight among the Exiles, anticipating that there are already people and civilizations back in Beleriand and that he’ll need to barter and ally with them)
