Family and wolves!

This is a short one, and when I am forced to pick my absolute favorite Silm Fan Fic that I’ve written, this is the one that I usually want to answer – or at least place it in the top five. Partially it is because it is short but does not need to be any longer or any accompanying story. And for all that it half-hinges on personal head-canons and interest in a character that is solely a name in a footnote of a supplementary text (Elmo), the meat of it is canon and the relationship between two characters that are of central importance to The Silmarilion and even during a key moment in the text. This isn’t me playing around in the margins, but having the confidence to write under the spotlight of center stage.

…I will have to check, but this might count as the first fic I wrote with Beren.

Change-of-heart where the in-law goes from hostile to begrudging to this moment where it is full acceptance – that is a story that we as humans deeply approve of, so no wonder I love it and want to celebrate it.

Commentary notes:

Behind them are the howls of the Great Wolf and Hound, trumpeting the echo of the wars of the Valar, the titanic struggle from before the mighty spirits’ entry into Arda, and it is nothing but noise.

I was tempted to add a hyphen or italicize or something to hammer the clean break of the shift in tone and focus, this grand mythic practically cosmic epic fight in the background- and that it is dismissed to the background because that’s not the focus. The focus is this quiet gesture and a man’s emotions.

The last line I switched from Elu to Elwë (and was very tempted to make it Elwê), because it’s a neon flashing sign that in that moment, he wasn’t reacting as King Elu Thingol with a few millennia of experience, but as the young man barely reaching adulthood scolding his family.

…I can write Elu the oldest sibling of three easier than Elu the King.

The uncanniness made my jaw drop. Yes. YEEESS!

[the author perches like cat having spotted a twitchy mouse’s whisker]

Which uncanniness in particular? Which part is approved?

I came out to have a good time and I’m feeling so attacked right now. I keep walking this path of pain and thorns ;_; omg it’s so good but whhhhyy

If I replied any way but honestly, it would be a disservice to you, a lovely loyal reader who made the extra effort to write me a reply. So:

I like tears.

And I keep promising that there’s happy stories with these OCs and then posting what amounts to a long string of death fics. Which…these are Silmarillion fics. I can’t write true original flavor, but here’s how I try my best.

Hey, he gets reembodied and reunited with Indomunië and they live together at the inn she runs and he works as a delivery/messenger boy because remember, this is angsty only because I’m borrowing it from this.

…. you’re on a mission to destroy me

I PROMISE YOU – all reading this series and Release from Bondage– that I have plans to write the sequel series of “What Everyone Is Doing After They’re Reborn”, just as this series is who they were before and during their imprisonment in Tol Sirion. And it will be self-indulgent fluff and comedy.

But yes, these particular stories are hunting for readers’ tears and heartbreak

WHY DID I COME BACK FOR MORE SUFFERING!??

….look, I don’t know what to tell you. It took me a while to be honest with myself, but as an author I tend to have three dials and I run through those settings: slice-of-life sweetness, sarcastic levity, and angsty horror, trying my best to end on notes of bittersweet and either fridge horror or fridge hope. (Release from Bondage, for instance is slice-of-life inside a horror setting with an end goal of perfect romantic movie no-more-pain-what-so-ever ending). Is that last dial the one my thumb lands on the most? Probably.

I mean, hey- I just confirmed for y’all that Mahtamë will be reunited with the husband she thought lost forever.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Yes, this IS the exact reaction I was looking for.

Alako- and Imin and Iminyë- were always loose ends I needed to address with my proposed backstories for the Kings of the Elves. Some solutions I could hand-wave or found a resolution that worked. Alako was refusing to appear in any Valmar setting or when I decided Imin (and a separate Iminyë) would be reborn just in time for the War of Wrath. And thinking of Dowager Queen Former Huntress Mahtamë- she wanted an answer. And I’ve been writing the Oromë waging war on the Dark Hunters – it came to me, the perfect answer of exactly what and where Alako was, the story of their reunion. And by writing both sides, I had the perfect answer to the POV switch prompt.

Ermahgod, I love it and that I remember them hehe

It’s Final Fantasy VII, so it was lots of Tifa Lockhart love and fans’ character analysis and how to translate as much of it over into Tolkien while not loosing what makes her while making something interesting enough for a Silm story. And hey, surprisingly it worked even for non-FFVII savvy people. (my worry with fusions like these. Is it enough from the base character to satisfy? Will those unfamiliar with the character root still be interested?)

I like my spear-carriers, what can I say?

Why u do this??

*giggles* I live off my readers’ pain, and I kept rewatching the Justice League trailer and reblogging gif sets of Lois’s dream reunion with Clark and feeling really really sad- and then because I already equated Jon Samuel Kent (comic canon son of Lois and Clark, precious cinnamon roll child) with Dior Eluchil, I starting thinking about rewriting that scene with Beren and Lúthien. Then thought, oh wait, there’s an even more painful version, Andreth/Aegnor!

Your characterizations, as usual, continue to give me life. love it!

(Now that I can actually reply) Thank you! This made me quite giddy while listening to Harvey’s winds over the sound of my snoring dog, btw. Characterizations aren’t something I’d label as my strength as a writer (I…honestly couldn’t accurately judge what are my strengths), and since this one-shot was general world-building head-canon and short on character study -except ironically a bit for Fingon- it was not what I was expecting praise for. Not complaining, mind you 😉

This gave me shivers!

As long as it was good shivers, I’ll gladly accept and take blame! For some reason a lot of readers found this fic creepier than I did while envisioning and writing it

And a big shout out to #one of the best silm fics to ever fic  @elfmaiddryope and #this is honestly one of my absolute favorite silm fics ever @mirandatam

Y’all makin’ me blush!
