BIG SMILE WIPES A TEAR

Big Smile, Thank You! (and to rencat and yavierel when i first posted this)

I’m not sure it this might come off bad, but honestly this fic -at least in concepts- is the one that feels the most like Tolkien would be okay with? Because not only is it a love of dogs but the closest to Christian values and theological ideas. The title is a joke on Mary, but not really a joke? I wasn’t mocking (except the nervous self-mocking) but more like waving a signal flag. That the lynch-pin is that Faron had pity on this Fallen creature, a pity that maybe wasn’t totally pure because I don’t know what that looks like nor think his character at the moment could, but was definitely supposed to be close to that idea of grace. That the former warg received grace (via Faron and the Valar) and even if she can’t get -and specifically doesn’t ask or expect but stills desires and hopes- forgiveness, wishes to express her gratitude towards him. As I’ve said before, I was raised basically atheist via absence of any religious education, with only a ā€œGod is the mathematical symbol piā€ and pop culture osmosis -American culture being not only Christian but generally Protestant even in the secular so even then… But my dad was a very lapsed Catholic, so with his side of the family I got dragged to Easter Mass once every few years growing up. IDK what I’m really trying to say is I was trying to incorporate those ideas of grace with my understanding of the theology being what I’ve picked up from art and fiction. Tolkien’s approach and his meta and meta on him has frankly taught me more than any sermons.

that TIME sorting quiz

Hey what’s with the gryff hate :^( (jokes i kinda hate it too)

Part of the buried self-hatred and rare moments of self-reflection is knowing that I’m a coward. That I am drawn to characters that show bravery by being brave only after initial cowardice or reluctance – I tend to like constantly courageous characters if there is a narrative Leeroy Jenkins moment that punishes them for that.

(It’s not universal)

That the other traits of chivalry and justice are very good, but a more egalitarian Hufflepuff version of those traits is a pure and better version. That motivation tied toĀ ā€˜abstract ideals’ (forgive me Thomas Paine) is my least favorite- give me motivation to do the right thing because of connections to people or self.

That I really really hate Sirius Black, that my favorite Gryffindor was Ron Weasley followed by Neville Longbottom. Ā

that is terrifying and also why I approve of Steampunk not being _too_ accurate. I like looking like a sepia-toned photo not a circus clown. (Bright accent colors are getting more popular though.)

Personally I think it’s beyond hideous, and I also really don’t like most Victorian silhouettes and fashions to begin with- but yes. I don’t want all Steampunk outfits to be accurate awful synthetic Victorian dyes (though need to do more with that arsenic green dyes as story character-inspiration), but break away from the monotone. Or admit that the AU isn’t justĀ ā€˜hey what if the technological advancements were more fantastic but what if they also had a more refined and elegant restraint to color use?’

I mean, I’m admittedly more on the costuming end of things than the fiction end, but typically I see very little pretense at accuracy and a lot of fantasy-Victorian, in the same sort of vein as Renfaire is fantasy-medieval. Ā Lots of goggles and bustled miniskirts and synthetic dreads and octopi and pseudo-mechanical gewgaws and weirdness, lots of vaguely Gothic-Horror-Lovecraft-neo-Victoriana-nostalgia flavoring, and a generous use of sepia tones and brass holding it all together for coherency. Ā

Yes, and odd that there’s no problem with synthetic bright colors for the Renfair fantasies- which I ugh dislike, unlike Steampunk where hey, use some accent bright colors and accessories (also Steampunk definitely improves the clothing/fashion lines for me by going away from the accuracy)Ā

I’ve never run in to anyone actually objecting to bright colors – my sky-blue-accented steampunk kimono always gets a ton of compliments, and emerald green and hot pink and royal purple have started turning up more as accents. Ā @charcoalandcowpies made runner-up in a steampunk pin-up contest in the outfit she’s wearing in the last pic in this set.Ā Ā The sepia-toned #aesthetic is just the most popular and straightforward, especially for the makers who put more effort into their gadgets than anything, and/or do their own leatherworking and like the natural oiled leather look. Ā

I’d honestly like a little more use of actual historical fashions like tea-tray bustles or the natural form gown, but I love the shit out of pretty much all Victorian/19th c. fashion. Ā The generic off-the-rack steampunk trends do get sort of boring, but it’s the lack of creativity, not color, that bores me.

(Also if everyone starts wearing bright colors we’d all clash instead of looking like a carefully costumed movie cast, and my planned ivory-and-teastain outfit wouldn’t be nearly as striking.)

Well of course we do! šŸ™‚ Yeah, the actual Victorian silhouettes and even the less common styles…are so very much not my thing.

So much of Victorian and Edwardian looks either bores me or looks ugly.

If I want elaborate costume details or even that gathered bustle effect, I will clamor for the rococo polonaise. Idk how I can love the zone-front of certain rococo styles but hate bolero jacket and apron front skirts. I think it doesn’t help that I also dislike fringe. Like, a lot. if it’s psuedo-historic costume I like men to wear breeches and if they’re wearing trousers then go for original dandy simplification. If I have to have those three-piece suits then the Romantic Era exaggerates the puffy shoulders and wasp-waist in a way that isn’t Elizabethan-Jacobean ugly (I won’t defend that shit).Ā

My ideal Steampunk would be more Napoleonic uniforms and Romantic inspired looks paired with those leather and brass and googles. If the comfort zone inclination is to stay monochromatic and similar shapes and ideas, at least a Regency vibe would be more elegant and even more cohesive? Ā

And I wouldn’t want all or even the majority of people in a photo-shoot for instance to be wearing those bright colors- but this gut feeling that it would make those nice fancy bright brass gadgets pop more.

The thing is, I rather don’t like those Victorian bright dyes and how garish they are, so I want those Victorian-esque fashions which I don’t like to share the color choices. That’s my actual complaint. ;p

CORAL PINK CAPRIS

Confession- coral is one of my favorite colors (at least for clothing) – I have sweaters and shirts in every length and fabric heaviness – at least that redder coral that’s almost watermelon (ff4040 or so), whereas the pants are more definitely a pink and which i wear with only a few shirts- though my fav is to pair it with a brown shirt and this scarf that’s brown with pink polkadots. Jewelry wise I have quite a bit too, but it tends to run more towards orange.

I worry capris make me look even more like a hobbit so i avoid them but this color was too tempting.

HARD AGREE. back when I did steampunk I wore a lot of grey and ivory and purple (altho not as daring a purple as that smoking jacket). I do like the whole sepia tone thing but it is harder to stand out when everyone else is in the same color scheme

See, that sounds elegant (and that smoking jacket is a purple to sear the eyes but hey, the first time they were able to get some of those colors as clothing dyes, let alone cheap dye, so they were excited about it. God knows I loathe the neon and glow-in-the-dark colors of the 80s and 90s just as much). Everyone shouldn’t be in the bright colors but exactly that if everyone is in the same sepia = old is doing it wrong.

(Also hey, I demand that any Superhero that does a Steampunk AU has zero excuse to not be as bright as Silver/Bronze Age colors)

that is terrifying and also why I approve of Steampunk not being _too_ accurate. I like looking like a sepia-toned photo not a circus clown. (Bright accent colors are getting more popular though.)

Low-key anxiety and worries and self-loathing and…

2) Chinese superman? 😮

image

YES!

Okay, so like as I said, I’m only a few pages in to my digital copies, but Google Kenan Kong or trust me I’ll be reblogging photosets of my newest son in a few hours. But a quick explanation:

Last Year, DC Comics has the big Rebirth event that was a ā€˜soft reboot’, with brand new books and changes to the universe and such (and things are better now) One of the initial big changes was the Superman books (Technically there are four/five superman themed or related books). The Superman of the nu52 series (2010-2015 more or less) who was not ..well, I consider DCEU Henry Cavill up thereĀ ā€œMY IDEAL SUPERMANā€ and the closer he is to that version the happier I am. Or the mid Post-Crisis married to Lois Lane Superman, he’ll do as my second choice. Rebirth had nu52 Superman die/dissolve and the Post-Crisis universe’s Superman take over the job. (Simplifying here but it’s comics, of course I am). Post-Crisis living in Nu52/Rebirth universe Superman is the one that’s married to Lois and has a son, Jon Kent. if I’m reblogging or reading DC Comics Superman, this is who I’m reading (Dad!Supes).

But when nu52 Supes died, his power split off and attached to more than one character and each of those characters got their own comic book series- to Dad!Superman but also to Lex Luthor who is running around in a mecha suit trying to be a good guy i think? i don’t know that series because it doesn’t focus on Dad!Supes and MommaBear!Lois raising Suberboy!Jon Kent. To Lana Lang and nu52 LoisĀ as Superwoman. And to this random teenager in China. Random teen is Kenan Kong, and he’s gonna get himself recruited into the Justice League of China and have adventures with his cast of characters and every once and a while the American Superman cast will cameo, but it’s nicely self-contained so easy to get started. Technically its title is New Super-Man.

1) sorry about those horrible feelings, friend, I’m glad the comics helped a bit! Sending you a lot of love fwiw ā¤

Thank you! I’m not sure if there’s medical shit behind it or counts as full on-anxiety attacks. My sister has them among a host of other things and when she describes them I think to myselfĀ ā€˜ah, sounds familiar’. I’ve suspected for a long time that I have a lot of un-diagnosed who knows what and god knows both my parents do – I wouldn’t be surprised. They are helping so i don’t regret the money spent. Waiting for the tight chest feeling to finish subsiding though
