In order:
Beren Erchamion, House of Bëor, House of Hador, House of Haleth
Previous Entries:
- HERE is the master-list.
Notes:
And because I started with Lúthien, I’ll continue with Beren Camlost and the rest of the Houses of the Edain. All four are almost direct copies of Tolkien’s watercolors of the four sigils. Beren is simple to understand: the black tri-peak of Thangorodrim before the horizon, the red hand he lost to Carcharoth, what is likely the Silmaril in the center, and the star of hope above.
It was hard to pick the precise accurate shades for Bëor off the scans of the original images. I went with muted colors I thought worked well. It’s very simple and abstract and follows elven instead of human symmetry (radial instead of vertical, probably Tolkien making a point of while the Hadorim superficially loved most elven, it was the Bëor with the greater spirituality).
I like to call the Hador sigil Conan the Color-blind. Eesh. Spears and mountains on a misty gray background.
For Haleth I removed the lines of green ‘vines’ on the nut-bearing tree because it destroyed the vertical symmetry
and looked ugly. Therefore it’s not 100% accurate to Tolkien’s design.

I’m starting with Lúthien 01 and 02, both reproductions of the original Tolkien designs. More to come (have close to 100 of these things).
Both have the white niphredil that first bloomed when she was born.

Ilsë, Swans

Notes:
Here are two sigils of which I am quite proud of how lovely they turned out, both for Teleri OC ladies strongly connected to the Swan-ships of Alqualondë.
- The first is my OC, Ilsë, of which I have written about predominantly in this fic here. She is the oldest daughter of Elmo, born in Cuiviénen during the period when her uncle Elwë first goes to Valinor, and was named for the same starry silver hair. When the Teleri are sundered between those that wish to keep looking for the missing Elwë and those that chose to follow Olwë onto Valinor, Ilsë leaves behind her parents and two younger siblings. In Valinor she becomes Olwë’s right hand, one of the foremost captains of the swan-ships, a woman who delights in the sea and teaching the younger elves how to sail. They are both precious to her, and her grief is cold and terrible and only partly assuaged when Elwing comes and convinces Ilsë to return the land of her birth and the family she had forsaken. Her device uses the colors of her father and uncle, the aqua on black and grays, instead of Olwë’s lighter beachy palette. The flowers, though in that Sinda turquoise, has the stylized shape of red spider lilies, which especially in Chinese and Japanese culture are strongly associated with death and cemeteries, and many legends attached to them about separation or meeting someone you will never meet again. They’re also called hurricane lilies for they tend to bloom after heavy rainfall. Thus the symbolism couldn’t be more perfect for Ilsë. The center holds a compass rose for nautical navigation and the points around it initially were waves but ended up more like shark fins. Which, again, make them perfect for Ilsë.
- The second Teleri OC belongs rightfully not to me but to crocordile, as she requested a sigil for her character that attempts to recreate the famed Swan-ships which hold a sacred cornerstone to the people of Alqualondë and which were stolen and destroyed. While she never succeeds in recreating an exact replica of the beauty that was lost, she is still highly respected for her shipbuilding and her skill and love of sailing the deep ocean. Beluwen loves Ossë’s swans, and like my Ilsë sails to Beleriand during the War of Wrath. Thus her sigil needed swans above all. I used some art nouveau panels for inspiration and added hints of ripples and reeds. The color scheme coordinates with one of the earlier Teleri sigils I made, the colors soft and cool and evocative of the sea.
Finally done with my recreation the Numenor sigil. What was Elros thinking, it’s like he wanted to cram all the colours en some of the shapes from his ancestors sigils in one or something. I’m sure Saruman of the many colours would appreciate this.

THIS IS AMAZING

In order:
Elu Thingol (Elwë), Melian
Previous Entries:
- HERE is the link for all.
Notes:
Here’s why the disclaimer has that part about ‘modifications’ of originals. Thingol’s sigil is not exactly a match. I added more visual interest in the center and a second tone throughout the aqua because it was looking too plain compared to everyone else, once I started redoing the early sigils. And you can see extra dark gray points in the background. I was severely ticked due to elven rules of heraldry indicating rank by the number of points touching the edges, and that Finwë had 16 on his ‘winged sun’ but Elu only had the regular kingly 8 for a ‘winged moon’ – and both were High Kings of their people, ambassadors to Valinor, and frankly in every way -including mistakes in parenting- I hold Thingol superior. Not just that I really liked Thingol’s character at that point, but Finwë himself is that unimpressive. So I subtly restored Thingol to his rightful rank.
(Downloaders of the Sims set already know my ranting and raging over bright aqua as a royal color of Renaissance-level-tech Doriath. A toss-up between dagged chief orange on bright blue or quartered aqua and logenzy black/dark gray for unusual royal banner color schemes…)
Melian is one of the oldest sigils made, and it shows. It’s a busy design, but for once I can’t be mostly blamed. That’s Tolkien’s fault. Luckily there’s enough white and black and gray to offset the blue, so her sigil still coordinates with Sindar gray flags and Lúthien 01.

Ingwë 01, Ingwë 02, Indis
Previous Entries:
- HERE is the master-list.
Notes:
I needed sigils and flags for the Vanyar (okay, I needed to make these for nearly everyone) but especially the first Eldar royal family, and I think it took me over a year and four design overhauls before I had something I was satisfied with and didn’t look too out of place with the few Tolkien originals.
I had two constants during the numerous redesigns:
- the color scheme of shades of yellow and gold on white
- the # of points touching the edge (Elven hierarchy had 8 points for a king, Finwë as Noldor High King had 16, so logically Ingwë as High King of All Elves has …32)
The final design is very sunflower, but it pairs nicely with all the white and gold trimmed banners. For Ingwë I made two versions of the first device because I couldn’t decide on which color variation. One then for Ingwë and the other can be for his sons. Indis was simple in that I cut the device to fit into a circle instead of the square lozenge and modified the elements slightly, adding some sky blue for reasons connected to Finwë.

Feel like going back and doing something with the sigils, it’s been so long. Not sure what, if anything is left to do anyway, aside from a few OCs from recent fic projects.
There’s always animated family trees to make, I guess.
