Happy Valentine’s Day, Kenshin loves you!
(This is my second EVER digital drawing :O please pretend any mistakes aren’t there)
Forgive me sister for I have sinned. It has been seven days since I last read manga.
Anyway this page came out of nowhere and punched me in the face, wow. He has…so many issues…and yet he is….SUCH A GREAT PERSON :’)))
That Aoshi guy seems like he’s gonna come back and have another go, I’m…not sure if I’m looking forward to that or not? It should be a good, well thought out fight (seriously I love how they think through the other person’s technique and how to counter it). But also Kenshin might get beaten up – or WORSE, he might get SAD D:
Gonna have to reply this way, if you don’t mind –
BUT YES!
So glad you are really the series, and sharing your thoughts. And Kenshin ruined my for a lot of protagonists, shonen or otherwise, because yes, here is your older and very experienced veteran, who looks back on what he has done – aka killed a lot of people – and knows that despite his reasons back then -trying to bring about a new world where life would be better for everyone – it doesn’t change the fact that he is was an assassin. That he’s filled with so much self-loathing that doesn’t end up wallowing on-screen angst in part because he believes in and treasures this optimistic belief in the goodness of others. That his personal suffering doesn’t equal out the suffering he caused, but to take those skills and dedicate his life to helping others and easing their suffering. (and again, such issues and the dealing/healing of his come up in later arcs)
The Kanryuu arc is the best of the first third without a doubt for this theme between Kenshin and Megumi about atonement (and other reasons too).
I like that I don’t have problems understanding the flights in RuroKen, and that there’s often this little elements of counter-moves and different strategies and it doesn’t stray too far into ‘kung-fu magic’ (i mean, yeah laws of physics get rather pretzel-like, but it pretends to not be outright magic – ignore the force of a blunt object at lethal speeds being not lethal, medicine back then could handle broken bones better that inflection rises of open wounds, or at least that’s our hand-wave)
Aoshi. Oh poor precious baby Aoshi. I won’t count it a spoiler that yep, you’re right, he will return in some fashion or another, and there are sad feels. And it’s great that he (and others) are here as characters that are almost matches to Kenshin in skill, and that the duels are as much between philosophies and personal outlooks. Fandom jokes about Kenshin as a warrior therapist and the Hiten Mitsurguri style as weaponised counseling exist for a reason. But Aoshi, he’s one of my favorite characters, and it started with ‘hey, a smart villain’ but really because with ‘oh no, his squad of wacky grotesque villain underlings are really loyal to him and that devotion is reciprocal, he sacrificed his personal opportunities to try to take care of his men/ not abandon them’ -and then Kanryuu and the Gatling gun and leave me to die~~ (he reminds me of a dark!Roy Mustang in a way. Speaking of which Mustang and Riza and the others from the Ishval War gave me a lot of Kenshin feelings). But yeah…I named the LotR fusion version of Aoshi Túrin. because.
Let’s see, other thoughts/questions: what do you think of the rest of Kenshin’s group? And feel free to send any other notices about parts that illicit feels. 😉
