superman giving the people what they wanted and showing up to a congressional hearing of the senate to answer for his actions that no matter how noble still resulted in collateral damage is one of the bravest things someone in his position could do, and even though it didn’t go well (thanks lex) he still cast aside everything that makes him superior to the average person and put himself at the mercy of the court because that’s what made people feel safe and that’s why superman is my favorite hero

But honest to God though if I were a citizen of the DCEU I’d not trust superman all that much either.

Look the actual first time people hear of Kal is when Zod reveals himself to earth.

So just imagine you’re sitting in front of your device like right now and all of a sudden it glitches and this weird voice keeps repeating. “You’re not alone.” Then he talks about how there is someone among you masquerading like he’s one of you but he’s not.

Zod has already stripped Clark of any sort of human sympathy from anyone who’s watching him. People already expect that it’s a mask. And even more importantly look at what Zod looks like through the screen I’d have peed myself if that just happened out of nowhere.

And then this clearly non human figure saying that there is someone like him disguised to look like a human. Wouldn’t trust that guy would you even when he shows up with a handsome and friendly face.

Why is it…

That the one superhero who has, ON SCREEN, IN CANON:

  • Defended a woman’s bodily autonomy on her terms with no indication of wanting to hit on her
  • Spoke up for the needs of the poor and disenfranchised
  • Commented meaningfully on the importance of the press and what they choose to cover
  • Sees the humanity of criminals and demands they be treated humanely.
  • Submitted willingly to government demands out of true concern for the fear and well-being of the people
  • Missed out on opportunities due to a need to save innocents
  • Spent his childhood reading philosophy to try and figure out the best use of what power he had
  • Expresses understandable fears and doubts about his actions and seeks outside advice from friends, family, AND even strangers.
  • Literally gave himself up for a people who immediately turned him over to his enemies
  • Later gave up his life for those same people
  • Spends most of his movies desperately worried about the safety/well being of either his personal relations OR the people of the world
  • Couldn’t stay in one place longer than a few months most of his adult life because he had to save people when something invariably happened
  • Regularly calls/checks in with his mother
  • Buys flowers for his girlfriend just BECAUSE

…the one people call ‘cold, unfeeling’ and ‘thinks he’s a god’?  Like… how.  Why.  WHAT BACK ALLEY DIRECT-TO-VIDEO RIP OFF “Super-Man” MOVIE ARE YOU WATCHING because it sure as hell isn’t the DCEU…

People hate that Superman has feelings. He’s not allowed to feel sad or be philosophical or introverted because he’s a boy scout, the american Icon that is full of hope and always smiling. If he’s not happy and smiling all the time, he’s “not my Superman”.

I think my favorite thing about Henry Cavill’s Superman is that he isn’t this brash, talkative, overly confident person. It’s cool to see that you can be heroic without those qualities, that it isn’t necessary in order to be good. I like that he always tries to do the right thing, regardless of what people think of him. I believe that in this modern world that’s important. Everyone has an opinion on everything and they can break down your dreams and it can seem easy to give up, but, Superman doesn’t give up on doing the right thing, regardless of how the world feels. That gives me hope that I can do the same thing too. I might be reaching with this feeling but if I’m reaching for anything it’s the stars, hopeful that I can be quiet but still great, just like Superman.

Great words! I relate to this so much. I don’t know how can someone say that he’s “not like Superman should be” or something like this. Speaking for myself, he truly gives me hope (I’m a very quiet and non-confident person). I think he’s the first superhero to actually give me hope on the superhero movies these days.

Being humble and kind is Superman at his base, the problem with Henry Cavill’s Superman is he doesn’t do much else

He literally saves the world…twice. He saves people all the time. Also, he saves THE WORLD!

Some excerpts because it’s a long piece:

The stark contrast in their childhoods – and subsequent adolescence – is something many people tend to overlook or gloss over when comparing the two. A huge oversight, especially when it’s such an important factor that shapes their characterizations.  (…) Likewise, with the vast difference in their respective beginnings, it should be expected that Diana and Clark will develop different personalities.

Their different backgrounds hold the root of their altruism. Diana is under no obligation to leave her paradise – where she knows peace with her loved ones – for our messy world, but she chooses to do so. Clark is under no obligation to help a world that continually hates and mistrusts him, but he too chooses to do so. It’s the Right Thing to Do, and they know it. This selflessness propels them forward in their heroic journey.

Is it all contrast between them? Not really, for there are parallels too.

People are also complex, and often, no sole character can embody everything we wish to relate with.

As a woman, Diana is to me the feminist dream of someone empowered. (…) However, Diana coming from a place of privilege, a literal paradise island, is something that I can’t relate with. That’s where Clark comes in. There are many moments where I better related to him in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, than Diana in Wonder Woman

As a person who feels othered and has grappled with depression, Clark offers me a shared experience many other male superheroes in movies don’t.
