That quote about how Fëanor stated that if they broke the Silmarils apart, he would die because he had poured his soul into his creations? The reforging of Gurthang is looking even more fridge horror – it is also canon that Eöl poured his soul into his two swords – which like the Silmarils have an otherworldly magic connection to their conception. And the fact that the sword talks about his feelings to Túrin, Gurthang is treated in-text as even more of a living sentient thing than the Silmarils. Now it’s a good thing Eöl was long dead before they took Anglachel to reforge it into Gurthang, because I’d be curious to see the effects (and I have a feeling the not-quite-right-ness of Gurthang had a bit to do with said reforging). Speaking of which, did they have to melt it back down into a billet? Because if it was just the edging needing to be sharpened there wouldn’t be the use of the word ‘reforging’
(and just how much and what was lost in that process, because you do lose metal and soul? in that)
or this implication that Túrin was trying to completely change the sword for psychological reasons and this subtext of surprise/dismay that the sword didn’t change color from going from Anglachel to Gurthang.
