fanfic meme

@anghraine tagged me, and as I have most of my fics on AO3, this was easy enough for me to fill out.

Give a quick overview of your fic posting/experience of the doing the meme if you want, and your overall AO3 wordcount:

Overall AO3 wordcount: 101,439

1. Fanfics with the most comments:

Whatcha Gonna Call It? wins with the most different people (which, at three isn’t much, but then I don’t get or expect comments. I have better luck on tumblr, but that’s because of mutuals)

2. Fanfics with the most kudos:

Again,

Whatcha Gonna Call It? has a surprising 47 kudos, and I still have notices that come in with another kudo on this story once a month or so. The next contenders sit at just above or around the 20 mark.

3. Your Oldest Fanfic:

Published online? While I didn’t post it to AO3 first, In the Camps of the Bór is my oldest Silm fic. It’s not the oldest idea, and my original fic I posted on my very old Livejournal back when I was in high school have some fusions in their roots, some closer to the surface than others. Hold Fast Ere Night Comes in closer in spirit, though, being the second published and idea-conception-wise very old. And thus the first to A03.

4. Your Latest Fanfic:

Published to A03? The Swanships

5. Your Proudest Fanfic:

Sophie’s Choice, why don’t ya’ … While it might be a toss-up between the Bór series and the Ingwë of Cuiviénen for overlooked or more unique spotlight shining – I’m not the only Silm fic writer to focus on the People of Bór or the Vanyar or even pre-Journey Ingwë, it’s not like there’s a lot of those fic to go around. Or fic focused on the Falmari or Sindar especially pre-Darkening. The various ones loosely dealing with the Bëor, be it Brides of Death or Hold Fast or even Neighborhood Watch/Boromir and the Swamps which are more defenses of Finrod+Bëorians, I really like because they are these stubborn bittersweet celebrations of that generational friendship between Nóm and his brothers to the decedents of Bëor. But as a fic? To be honest Release from Bondage has some of imho my strongest lines and it’s the longest and beta’ed and it combines my ‘make you cry over OCs’ of the Red Band series plus ‘fusions of other canon to make said OCs’ which is something I find incredibly fun and where I can fuse or reference other canon and make it correlate to Silm canon is something that I get very smug and proud over (see examples of…way too much of my stuff) with a pov, place, and time period not covered to death in Silm fic, which is my MO goal.

6. Your Longest Fanfic:

At 24,981 words,

Release from Bondage laps the other two contenders(

The Hunter-bold and Maiden-brave (11,988 words) and

Of Ingwë Ingweron (12,954 words)

).

7. Fanfics with the most Bookmarks:

The Brides of Death and Hold Fast Ere Night Comes both have 6 (but teh second has a note, so it wins).

8. Your top 3 crossover fanfics:

I do fusions instead of crossovers, some of which I only note in author’s notes. If I could get around to writing it, the Vagabond Gondor would trump all others in personal appeal. but by AO3, Bull and the Tides is more popular via kudos than Release from Bondage – length and format being part of that, no doubt. And as I haven’t finished the other Band of the Red Hand that are crossover-fusion characters like the Girls of Minas Tirth, these three are the only fusion-conceived OCs in my Silm fic.

Now, what The Hunter-bold and Maiden-brave counts as, if that’s a crossover, can be #3.

9. Your favourite character to write in fanfic:

I adore writing from the snarky pov of my Angrod and various Bëor. Same with Faron. As far as characters, Elu was surprisingly easy for me and coming up in fic over and over. Young versions of him and Ingwë in Cuiviénen, but that’s probably half because of the setting and world-building. I love Edhellos and Ilsë. And Bledda and his mother.

But writing the Ainur, to be honest. Because either I make them as wink-nudge-present as metaphoric description (the end of the latest chapter of

Release from Bondage) or Melian or Oromë where I go from very human to science jokes to pile on the descriptors and metaphors.

Ask me a question about one of my fics or series. It can be absolutely anything in any project and I will tell you the honest-to-goodness answer (even on the progress/plans for next chapters of current series).

Don’t hold back. Whatever you ask, I’ll answer as truthfully and as completely as possible. You can also ask about my writing as a whole, if you like.

Ask away! It’d be encouragement to write which I need right now.

Your original characters, and your way of gapfilling. I <3 your Cuiviénen fic!

Original characters and gap-filling describe 90% of my Silm fics 😀

Yay, the Cuiviénen fics! it’s a bit of an oddball stylistically, not to mention that gap-filling of a less than popular characters or place, again OC and headcanon heavy, so I fear it doesn’t generate reader interest of love -so thank you for sharing your like of it! (More incentive to finish chapter 5 wherein I finally get to the naming of Indis)

Where do you publish your work? Usually first to Tumblr, then AO3 (and sometimes Silmarillion Writer’s Guild)

What medium/application/etc do you write in or with? Google Docs (or just a tumblr post on what i think will be short things/ prompt answers) or Microsoft Word, and sometimes when at work I resort to mechanical pencil and notebook paper/yellow legal pads.

Do you collaborate with others? I’ll bounce ideas off friends in the pre-planning stages, but no.

How much editing do you do before you publish? Depends on the work. Sometimes it’s just a quick re-read before publishing, others I edit constantly as writing and afterwards, a rare few I have a beta go over. And constantly re-reading long after I’ve published to correct and edit and re-work.

Do you listen to music when you write? Most of the time, because I’m usually listening to music while at my computer anyway- either my general Pandora station, whatever song I have on repeat at the time, or a few soundtracks (Journey game soundtrack especially)

How do you decide what to write about? Characters I like, characters or situations that bug me because fandom ignores or presents them in a way that irks me, or lines or tidbits in canon that I wanted more info. Fusions with another story, character, or plot that I also like and therefore the challenge of incorporating into the setting.

When do you write? Any time of day when the mood strikes and I have access to writing tools, though generally in the afternoon going into late evening.

How often do you write? I go through inconstant spurts – there will be days where I’m writing constantly in long hour marathons and then weeks where I barely write anything that isn’t work related.

Do you take requests? I like doing meme prompts, so I have a lot of those. But I don’t get enough feedback for full-on story requests.

Is there any genre or type of story you want to write but are hesitant to? I have a long list of stories I want to get to, and I want to expand on writing full-blown romance (and smut). More fight scenes and political theater. But I wish I wrote more straight up humor, and I feel like that is harder to write successfully than angst.

Any inspirational quotes, videos, tricks, articles, etc. that help you stay motivated? Aha- stay motivated? Eh no. Honestly, I never cared about inspiring quotes from famous people (or having role model inspiration figures). Reviews and feedback helps, and spite and anger for stories and things I dislike. And usually when I’m trying to write one story I get the inspiration to start and finish something else unrelated.
