LEGIT LAUGHING AT THAT MAEGLIN SCENE
Yeeeaaah, I may have tweaked the lyrics to make them fit Maeglin (not saying i have, just that i might)
;D
“ near the sea and lots of sweet-smelling trees.” SWEET SIGHS
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME.
I don’t have (or really want) to live directly never the water, but I have to live less than fifty miles from the ocean. I have a seagull to pigeon ratio, plus benefits of sea breezes and their temperature climate calming affect. And like, we only get a list of names without descriptions (except mallorn) for ten or more trees brought over from Tol Eressëa to Númenor where all we know was they were colorful and smelled really nice. Which! That sounds lovely!

jesus yeah the first night thing is also present in ASOIAF in a chapter when Roose Bolton says it existed and uses it as an excuse to rape Ramsay’s mom >_____> r i d i c u l o u s
Yeah, like with Roose, it makes sense that he’s a creep and fake justification for one man’s abuse of power (and the Umbers as nasty gossip about the wild neighbors you don’t like), but it is ridiculous. Though the more I try to justify it away, honestly with how GRRM doesn’t go for accuracy w/ the medieval (and late renaissance, and yet no gunpowder which even at Crecy they had canon) but for this darker and more sexist and awful and grim version, adding that myth and making it fact in this world fits with the crap-dark Westeros. (WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE POWERFUL MERCHANTS AND GUILDS IN WESTEROS?)
i have no words for how much I hated Aemund lol. the absolute worst. I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO COMMENT ON THE SMALLFOLK KILLING RHAENYRA’S DRAGON WHATA SCENE
Oh gaaaah Aemund. Like, explain the eye loss episode because it hints that Rhaenyras’s sons were nasty little shits too, but man oh man was he just progressively a meaner and uglier piece of work with each new paragraph (but loyal to big bro, so wondering if he’s a proto/echo Victarion?)
That smallfolk mob scene!!! Just- after the first Tumbleton battle description, you understand exactly why killing off dragons is the best idea ever, because as terrible as wars are in these novels, there’s hope to escape and survive if it’s just armies of men, not those nuclear analogue dangerous to foe and ally and fuck dragons.
But the press of the mob, the hundreds that die but that we get their names, they are heroes of Westeros, just ugh the image of the queen’s dragon flying trapped in the Pit and the relief when the roof caves in but at the same time horror because the people trapped underneath, but ugh, that they get all the dragons – that was a pleasant and happy surprise.
also the greyjoys were a letdown!! the mention to the young lord reaper in the beginning makes you super excited but he never shows up?
SO UNFAIR!
Actually, the novella was extremely abrupt in its ending. like what??? what there a rogue editing process that chopped off the last paragraphs or something?
We have an account for how Aemund lost his eye in the Rogue Prince! They were all very young, Aemond was 10 and he attacked 3yo Joffrey physically, and when his brothers ( who were around 5 and 6 year olds) found out they came to his rescue, and in the ensuing brawl Aemond lost his eye…. I think pulling out a dagger was extreme but Luce was 5 years old, had his nose broken, and at this time all the bastard bullshit propaganda was already being thrown around, idk idk I don’t think they were shitty kids *falls hard for whatever propaganda was being spread through those books*
That scene with the mob in the dragon pit made a huge impact on me omg…. yes, at any rate, even though i don’t share your extreme feelings on dragons, I also am glad they finally all died out and think it was ABOUT TIME x_x but I was so sorry for the peasants that died in the attack agaavabdnfjnfjnsk!!!!!
Yeep the ending was super abrupt and they cut a few parts which many fans were expecting – like the fact that the twins Arrik and Errik, both of the kingsguard but fighting for different sides, were supposed to have killed each other at some point, etc
I do think the novella suffered HEAVY editing and a lot must have been left out!! That means I… should probbaly…. read… my copy of the world of ice and fire at some point >____> but i just have so much to read ahahjansbhsjd (BTW I FORGOT TO MENTION i finally read Shard of Honor, and am finishing a few other urgent readings before jumping on Barrayar!)
As for GRRM’s shitty grasp of medieval/renaissance period, WELP, yeah, I wouldn’t even care much about the gunpowder and the utter lack of scientifical improvement if at very least he didn’t cling to the GRIMDARK EVIL AGES clichés >___>
WHELP. WHAT THE EVERY LOVING F**, AEMUND? Like, that was not the ages of the story I expect to deal with? (Seriously? Who was watching those princes? Fail. So much Fail)
Ugh- there are some dragons in fantasy stories I do like; I’m not 100% anti-dragon. But they are a cliched and boring fantasy option, and there are more interesting and less-used beasts one could use as an author and I hate how generic they are and that I’m supposed to think ‘oh cool fantasy awesome strong symbol’ when I see them. And the dragons in ASoIaF only begin to be remotely interesting as the horrific uncontrollable symbolism of war’s inglorious destruction. Frankly when they were long extinct but had once existed, that was interesting. (Dany’s eggs hatching = lame disappointment and try as I can, nothing shakes me from this)
But ugh, that scene was the closest to a proper and glorified Peasant’s Revolt, something which was SO COMMON in both medieval and Renaissance and Reformation/Counter-Ref and here we finally had a fantasy version and this time the nobility/class oppressors were symbolized by dragons and it wasn’t knights but the combined and tragic but the disenfranchised people powerful in their numbers and despair and hope and drive… ♥
(I read enough ‘radio to the Romans’ type series where they do have the introduce gunpowder or introduce the industrial revolution into a ‘medievalish’ world that I can get my fill from those series. But the gaps in world-building in ASoIaF make me wonder if I need to research maybe something about the French society at this time because going off the English models the lack of the guilds and Armed Band of London – where are any town mayors? I know the World Book finally send some light on charter cities. and I probably need to read the fourth book because that’s where the Faith rise to power because that was another thing that bugged me, the lack of powerful monasteries and church lands and positions…)
The novella seemed very edited by buzz-saw needed at least a thousand words extra space. Like, if he was going for ‘incomplete medieval document with missing holes in the narrative’ – that would have been neat – more footnotes then, I think. Maybe too much Pratchett and then digging around in HoMe, but it begged for some faux-translator’s asides.
YAY Bujold! Cordelia is awesome!
9. What Age of Arda would you like to live in? (and 11. What kingdom would you want to live in?)
If I’m still a mortal? Early few centuries in Númenor, before the kings turn to envy and imperialism and all those attitudes that become the King’s Men crap, back when it’s peaceful and on good visiting terms with Valinor. Has decent social structure and health, near the sea and lots of sweet-smelling trees. Would spend a lot of time trying to view the artifacts saved from Beleriand (fangirl hard if I see the Ring of Barahir or the Aranrúth)
if an elf, any era, hello Valmar! (but again, preferably post-First Age. I want the Sun and Moon and a large influx of Sindarin elves and exposure and excitement over the Edain. Have I mentioned how much the fact that there ends up more Sindarin speakers in Valinor to the point that Quenya has more speakers in Númenor than Aman? That poetic irony tickles my inner Thingol.)
12.You can save one kingdom from destruction, which do you choose?
Ugh, can I pick anywhere but Doriath and be me? Mouths of Sirion, actually. The loathsome Kinslayers destroying the true last hope of Beleriand’s people, the settlement of Sindar and Noldor and most of all all the surviving Edain people
Actually, if there is one place I would spare any marauding army wanting to sack and plunder it, that should not have been ever touched by violence and its people slain, it’s Alqualondë. Fuck You, Village Idiot.
18. What is the hardest name or word for you to pronounce?

I mispronounce common English words constantly, let alone names I’ve never heard aloud (of which I consider myself proud I at least know that the dh is a soft th sound). Probably whenever you get clusters of multi-syllable vowels in some of the obscure Quenya names – I interpret vowels for whatever valuable of pronunciation I pick, so it’s like giving me a row of misfires to drawl out in a soft Texan accent and add extra rhotic opportunities 😉
survivingrealitywithoutnormality:
end of the novella – neat twist. pity Baela died (edit: lived. huh.). how long did Aegon II live afterwards? (and how did his kids die to leave Aegon III as king- or did Aegon III marry his cousin Aegon’s surviving daughter?) What dragons were left at the end of this anyway- that Ulf White’s dragon survived, I think…? (the poison scene was cool, way to go out impressing us, unimpressive Hightower lord)
Annoyed the Tully lords weren’t named (I wanted by Elmo, darn it) and interesting that Manderly and Dustin got page notice but their liege-lord Stark did not. And only one mention of the Greyjoys.
But so many dead dragons. And smallfolk having a proper peasants’ revolt and hearkening to London’s Bands and mobbing those dragons to death.
Also, Alys Rivers seems very intriguing, but Aemond Targ wins the bastard medal.
Lastly, the dragons = allegory for nuclear weapons was almost ‘beat you with a stone club’ obvious.
IIRC, Maelor is killed by a mob when a plan to sneak him out of Kings Landing to safety backfires horrifically.
That only leaves Jaehaera.
Aegon II is poisoned (possibly be his own men) after the Tully victory for the Blacks. The Blacks then place Aegon III on the throne and he’s married to Jaehaera as part of peace agreements but I get the impression that he’s supposed to be claiming in his own right rather than through her. I’d assume part of the reason the Greens don’t rally around Jaehaera before the marriage is that men who fought because they wanted a male claimant to the throne wouldn’t support her. That and who knows if they got concessions in terms of who Aegon’s seven regents were…
That might be why Aegon III allows the new custom of Targ inheritance following agnatic primogeniture to be established rather than following male-preference primogeniture like the rest of Westoros.
I looked up some entries that explain what happens (only six months a king? Ha, Aegon. Let’s face it, Egg was the best of you bunch to carry that name (III is Dragonsbane and thus will always have a soft spot, II is a jerk, I is the William the Conqueror/the Bastard that starts this whole invasion of several kingdoms just because he has giant murder weapons and have I mentioned I hate Aegon the Conqueror? and VI was without a doubt the worst of the bunch)
Jaehaera yep- married probably to solidify Aegon III’s claim but tying her claim into his, but he’s throned on his own right. And reading about her- she dies the same way as her mom -and at age ten?! Seven Hells. Jaehaera wins for most tragic character in ASoIaF. I hate you, GRRM.
But yeah, the Black&Green novella ends at this really sudden and abrupt place. I wonder if it was on purpose. idk, it needed a footnote to explain what happened next.

I wonder how far you’ll stand being on team green hahaha Alsooo there is a,scene near the end I really want your comments on! :DD
I’m sort of on team green because they have less dragons. Actually I’m on Team Couldn’t One of You Have Sucked It Up and Not Had a Civil War. Or Team Fucking Viserys Renew the Fealty and Legality So This Didn’t Have the Strong Wiggle Room to Happen.
But mostly Team Dead Dragons (glee!)
crocordile said: But I was sad for Lucerys tho 😥 Aemund is the worst and that sexist Baratheon too ughhhgghg
Ugh what the heck is Aemund’s problem? Nasty asshole.
I really wonder what the opinions of the four Baratheon girls were during all this.
survivingrealitywithoutnormality replied to your post : local library didn’t have next Dunk and Egg…
I’ll be interested on your take on it. Though obviously you’re pretty well-acquainted with the story anyway!
I’ll post my totally biased thoughts after I read it, then!
YAY, I did better than I thought I would (ugh, all my mutuals are lovely people, my virtual bar regulars, I didn’t want to make anyone feel negatively).
anghraine replied to your post : I flit between fandoms and generally don’t care…
Hehe it’s me!
AH! I was unsure because it wasn’t main characters 😉 Plus my feeling, just from my end, is that it’s less a flitting between fandoms as much as several in constant devotion, but some get more exposure (depending on which post explodes in unexpected popularity 😉 Or who gets the fascinating grad school footnote.)
crocordile replied to your post : I wander far and wide and am in fandoms big and…
IT IS ME AHAHAHA AWWWWWW <3<3 Love your tags!!! Hell YEAH my princely brother :’)
Thank you! Tags all true ;D (Roseanne is the Huorn; you are the Entwife btw if we get technical, no i can’t really example why) Trees and the Sea are so much better than Silmarils
allonsymiddleearth said: Yes! You are right 🙂 I was going to say “valar headcanons and Melian,” but with the amount I post about that valar headcanon challenge I’m so slowly doing I thought that might be /too/ obvious :p
Whenever Melian in on my dash (and Yavanna. And Galadriel) I have to double-check who posted it to make sure I’m not just assuming it’s you. 😉 You make me think of warm and queenly Melian, comfy tea mugs, and friendly cats. Totally convinced so.
And I really want to do that Valar headcanon meme too! Have the link saved for eventualities.
